I have a 1979 for pickup and was wondering what axles are under it. Its a F-150 with the 351M 400 and a C6. how do you identify a Dana Axle? Also Does this come with a mated or devorced transfer case? I havent had a chance to look.
They are probably 70 rears in the CC. On the diff housing on the front off to the side you'll find a '44' or '60' or '70' cast into it. This is near where the casting meets the axle tube. That's the best way to identify them. Go under there with a wire brush and clean up the flat parts of the housing and you'll see it.
After you see a few though you can tell just by looking at them. The front hubs on the 60s are a lot bigger than the 44HDs. The dana 70 rear that I have has 1 1/8" lug nuts.
Beware however that the older front dana 60s are low pinion and if you try to put it in your 79 with a married t-case you might have a hard time with drive shaft angles. A 78-79 CC could have a high pinion dana 60.
The pre-77 dana 60s have slightly weaker axle shafts than the 78-79s, but are still stronger than the 44HDs and have larger u-joints so they are still a better axle. I've seen some folks here say that they are weaker but everything I have 3 pre-77 dana 60s plus a 79 44HD and looking at them along with some research on the axles I'm sure they are still stronger than the 44HD.
