You will have alot better success in the exhaust forum Bud. But I would have to say yes to that. The other place to do some reading is in the 7.3 PSD forum, this question has come up alot. Nice to see another new member on here, welcome to FTE.

yup, the 4'' exhaust will more then "pay" for itself when towing. the exhaust temps will be lowered about 200-250* compared to stock. look into a MBRP system.
If your truck is completely stock and you are planning on keeping that way the 4" system won't do much for you except sound good....and it will keep the towing temps down.
If you plan to up the power level at any time the big exhaust is more than worth it, it's a neccessity.
trust me, you WILL be making mods to dump more fuel to make more power at some point in the future... there is sooooo much more power in these mules than you get with a stock setup..! a 4" exhaust is a VERY good place to start, but you don't have to do this first... if you look at the list of mods in my signature you will get an idea of what you need... i reccomend a good set of gauges to start with... even stock... it's important to be able to monitor engine and tranny temps and boost numbers are good to know, besides it's fun to watch that gauge out of the coner of your eye...! if you are wondering if the gauges are worth it... take a ride up to NH and i'll let you run your stocker against my MILDLY modified mule... when i pull away from you like you are tied to a post you can decide for yourself what you want to do...! i know i'll NEVER go back to a stock setup... i did once since i got my tuner and i couldn't stand it..!
If you tow yes. If not I'd go with a 3 1/2" to 4" downpipe. You'll keep most of the low end quickness. I tow and 4" turbo back is the ticket for me.
After you decide on size then you get to choose SS or Aluminized.
Take your time and have fun spending.
Do a ebay search. There is a Banks stainless system on for $609. Lifetime warranty. I've used aluminized stuff on my cars, only would last about 3-4 years. I think stainless is worth the extra. Just my $.02

Does it need to be a 4" downtube? or will the original 3 1/2 " downtube work with the rest of the system 4"? Also, what is the large watermelon shaped part in the exhaust before the muffler? the cat. converter? and, if so, can I eliminate that part entirely and still be legal? Thanks cob
no. the stock downpipe is 3''. the rest of the system is 3.5''
the watermelon thing is the catalytic converter, and you must keep it in for legality. some hollow it out to make it look stock, but in fact, it is just a open chamber. you might want to look into a cat-back system.
Welcome Cob. I will agree with Johnny8. You are starting in the right place, and be sure to add a set of guages to your list. I did all my mods backwards, Edge first, guages, intake, then exhaust. I saw some changes with the Edge but it never showed its potential untill I added the exhaust. It is like a totally new truck. Wouldn't have it any other way. The only problem is that it is habbit forming.
no, it is either all aluminized, or all stainless. the stainless clamps are designed different, because the stainless is alot harder and takes alot more torque to make it tight, opposed to aluminized. i have the aluminized system, and i only regret NOT going to duals.
