I am hooking uo a trailer brake controller and I have some questions. I found the four wire under the hood by the brake master cylinder, are these the four wires that I have to hook too? Do I have to add a fuse somewhere to get the unit to work? Any help would be great.
if you have the tow package, it is a plug in under the dash. if you remove the panel below the steering wheel it is to the right kinda under the radio real easy plug in. you should have got the conector when you bought the truck but if it was a used truck maybe not, like mine! lots of places have the for like $10-$15. do a search i am pretty sure there is a post with pics. those wires under the hood run in the firwall and are for aux. wiring through the fire wall. nice so you dont have to drill holes or snake wires through!
Assuming your talking about an excursion, which all came with a trailer hitch and a factory installed pollack style connector at hitch. The wires should be under dash. Looking for a red white and blue wire.
blue to trailer brakes
red from brake lights
white ground
kaker
I found the wires under the fuse box and under the hood. I guess I have to hook up the rest myself. it seems weird to run the brake wires through the fire wall since they have to hook up to the brake inside the truck. Am I right on this? Like I said, I have the four wires under the hood by the master cylinder and then I have the four wires under the parking brake release. Any help of where to hook up these wires?
no! you dont have to those are for aux. items there is a trailer brake control plug in to the right under the radio here read this link it will help you https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...+brake+control
also do a search just dont ask and take some ones advice, it took me 2 mins. to put my control in just remove the panel under the steering wheel find the plug in and plug in your brake control! you will need the adapter the truck came with or have to buy one i will give you a link to where i got mine as well.
Well, I guess I will go back down and look again right over the tranny hump by the gas pedal. I will let you know if I find it. Now that you said something I remember the connector in the glove box, but U don't have any paperwork for it. Does anyone know if the 03 X is a different color pattern for the four wires?
should not be any differance in colors, it is pretty simple once you have the control and harness side by side the harness and brake controll almost always has matching wires! all mine have
FOUND IT!!!! I had to take off the lower panel (where the hook and cup holder are) and there it was. That was a piece of cake. Thanks to everyone for their help.
IMHO Prodigy is the best brake controller out there. If you don't have a controller yet, many of the vendors will include a factory cable for your vehicle that hooks to the connector under the dash and then right to the back of hte Prodigy...no splicing. Splicing is simple mind you but having one piece of wire to each connector is always best.
The thing I like about the Prodigy is it is all solid state and a proportional controller. Meaning it senses the speed of your Ex and applies a proportional amount of voltage to the trailer brakes based on the Ex deceleration...it costs a little more but IMO worth every penny when you tow heavy loads as I do with my camper.
Thanks to this post I finally found that darn plug!
I tried to hook up my controller about 6 months ago, thinking it would be as easy to locate as the one in my Expedition. To my surprise I couldn't find it anywhere. I ended up using the wires under the hood, that I now know you shouldn't use for the power, and ran a new wire from the brake switch to the rear plug (what a pain that was). Soon after I did that I was getting warning lights on the dash if I used the brakes alot, like in bumper to bumper traffic.
After finding this post I checked, and sure enough there was the plug, quick change from the old wiring and the warning lights are gone.
