I was wondering what years of 4.0L are compatable with an 86 v-6 tranny from the rangers. If anyone has a 4.0l for sale for under 600 bucks feel free to give me a hollar
also make sure you get the eec and all appropriate wiring for the 4.0L you will need it for the swap as well as the engine itself. also i would try to get an eec that corresponds with what you have. what i mean is if you have an automatic tranny get an eec for and auto. and visa versa for the manuel.
Make sure you get the right one for the tranny though. We've had several auto trannies, some four some five speed. You're gonna have to find a 4.0L with your engine and tranny to get the comp from. Sounds like you have some fun ahead of you!
i have a 5-speed, but should the 40.l's tranny really matter because my doesn't have any electronics on it. i thought all that mattered was the engine comp was the right one. What years are the easiest for the swap, what do you think i'll get for gas mileage after the swap?
The 4.0L will hook up to a 2.9L or even a 2.6 or 2.8L v6 tranny, but they are really too soft for a 4.0L engien.
You do NOT need a slushbox computer for a non-electronic auto tranny. You can use a similar year manual tranny computer for all the engine or tranny cares.
For example, my friend got a manual tranny computer for his 4.9L F350 wrecker truck, which has a C6 tranny. Works fine.
The easiest 4.0L donor would be the earliest model you can get. As in...don't get a 99 model drivetrain where you DO need the tranny computer for that instance! Try around 91 or earlier, if possible.
I'd like to see how a manual tranny comp is running an auto.
If you have a stick, it doesn't matter either way. I agree you don't want a tranny from a 2.8/2.9L for the 4.0L, the torque can rip it to shreds. I would say get the 4.0L engine, but get the tranny with it.
will the newer sohc 4.0L's bolt up to the older v-6 trannies. i was also wondering what kind of t-cases were on the newer 5-speed trannies that bolt up to the newer 4.0L's. will the one on my ranger now bolt up to a newer one?
I have a 90 4x4 ranger with a 5 speed tranny. I would like to swap the 2.0 for a 4.0. I have read that you should get 4.0 tranny also when you get the engine. What else do I need to get. Does all the wiring of the 2.9 interchange with the 4.0
Also, I would some help on how to post a new question on this.
Thanks for the help anybody

I would like to get more performance out of my ranger. I noticed that there are more performance parts for the 4.0 then the 2.9. Thats why I would like to put in the 4.0
Sorry. I was kinda short in my response. What I meant by probably not was that the wiring stuff wouldn't interchange. You'd need all of it from the 4.0L since it's EFI.
Good little performance jump. If you're going to go through it why not just drop in a 302/5.0L?
