I've got a 1979 f250, 460 C6 trans. It shakes and vibrates when you accelerate. I have checked and fixed any front end parts as well as replace the carrier bearing. The drive shaft looks fine. The engine leaks at the real seal real bad as well when ever it is driven. The seal doesn't leak when the truck sits and idles. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
As far as the leak, try idling it at high RPM if you are having a hard time locating the leak. If you have already pinpointed it then all you have to do is change the seal.
I have to correct myself, if the vibration is only during driving it is hard to say exactly what the problem is but it sounds like bushings, alignment, or tire balance. If the vibration is there when pressing the accelerator even while idling, then you should check your motor mounts.
Check the universal joints. They could be worn and causing the vibration. My 78 F250 has the vibration also when I excelrate also. I just got the truck this fall and I'm waiting til spring to do my universals. They don't clunk, but they could be dry from not being greased and this will cause a vibration and early wear of those joints. So I have those to do this spring and several other things I'm finding also. Same problem with my rear seal on engine another spring chore. I wonder if you lose a lot of oil with that seal gone, for my truck seems to lose oil fast here, but when parked there is only a little puddle under the truck. I was told because the the highway rpm's that I maybe pushing out the oil past the seal. Yet the under carraige is not really coated, just a little damp.
All,
When a rear crank seal goes, it only leaks oil while the motor is running. Meanwhile the flywheel, clutch, or torque converter will sling this oil against the inside of the bell housing and this oil will acquire in side the bell housing as it runs. When the vehicle is shut off, the residual oil will drain down and out onto the ground. If you have no dust cover, the oil will not accumulate, it will just sling on to the ground. If you can create a negative pressure in the crankcase you can minimize the oil leak. Insure that you PCV valve is working and this will help.
About the Vibe:
1.Probably U-joints. Remove and Replace
2. Secondly tires. Balace them.
3. Thirdly motor mounts allow motor/exhaust to sag on frame. Causes high frequency vibe or "buzz". Ashtray is usually the item to shake violently.
Good Luck, Have Fun,
