I'm affraid that my Explorer sport's transmission is going out
when I hit the gas it goes but eventually it starts jerking, it feels like its shifting to the next gear but wont get there, just keeps pulling and pulling, if I let go on the gas it goes to a lower gear and it's ok
the funny part is that some days it's totally ok, it's an on and off problem
also it makes a funny noise, some kind of sqweaking from underneath, I'm sure it's not from the front of the truck
I had a 98 winstar with the same symtoms which would come and go.
It ended up being an electronic switch which determines if your in 1st,2nd or drive on the auto trans.Well my van was stuck in 2nd.Lots of jerking funny noises, and the next morning when I brought it to a trans shop all was fine.
After about $700 after, with still no fix it ended up being this $25 dollar switch which litterally took 2minutes to replace.
The $700 went towards lowering the transmission replacing a couple of ceramic pieces which were cracked allowing some fluid into electric areas, etc. After spending that money I drove only a few miles before it acted up again.Only to find out it was a $25 part I needed.
I should have gone straight to the dealer, but with transmission problems I thought I was screwed.
It sounds pretty serious but if you haven't checked your Throttle Position Sensor please do. I had what I thought was an intermittently slipping transmission for a months that I could not figure out. I checked the TPS with a multimeter and it looked fine, but if it's intermittent then it seems like it will only show bad if it's in a "bad mood". I never got problem codes from it. But finally I just spent the $35 to replace it and it hasn't slipped since.
Yes, try to pull the codes but note that I thought for a long time it was OK because it wasn't coding anything, but I replaced it and now several months no problems. That being said, it should code but in my case for some reason it wasn't (again, on the assumption that it was my only problem).
I got mine at Autozone for about $35 and it takes about 10 minutes to install. It sits right on the throttle body. Can't miss it. If you need guidance let us know.
my check engine light is not on.. but from what i have read.. it might be a good idea to start by replacing the TPS. I think I am going to go ahead and replace it..
