5.4 towing capacity?
My wife & I are looking at a 2004-2005 Excursion to be our new family truckster. We've been looking at an '04 4WD with a 5.4 and 4.10 axles. I was under the impression that Excursion 4WD's were 6.8L standard, diesel optional. Oh well.......
We need to be able to tow our 4000# camper, and I'm quite sure the smaller engine would have no problems, but I was curious. Also, should we look for a V10 unit? Don't want to pony up the long green for a diesel right now, and our tiny camper doesn't warrant it anyway.
Any idea what the in-town mileage might be for this unit?
Thanks,
Pete
I used to have an F350 with a 5.8 gas V8, and while towing my loaded car trailer, the whole rig weighed in only around 10,600 pounds ... and that 5.8 struggled. On top of that, I never got better than 10MPG no matter how it was driven ... 7 or 8MPG towing. My 6.8 gets 11 to 12 in the city, 14 to 16 highway, and 11.5 towing the same car trailer.
I would get the Mighty BSEG V-10...
You won't be sorry...The engine is smooth as silk...Quiet as a sleeping baby..and will last darn near 300k if well taken care of..
I have an 02 Ex with the V-10 with 28k on it...I absolutely LOVE IT...
Big Rig
With the 5.4 V8 and 4 wheel drive, you're probably looking at about a 6K to maybe 8K towing capacity. That also means that if you need some power to get the trailer moving in a hurry, it won't do it as well as the V10 would. An Excursion equipped with the V10 will have a towing capacity of 11K (2wd with the 3.73 rear) and maybe about 10,600 with the same rear. With the 4.30 rear, you're looking at 11K either way you go, just more power to move sooner. Like cficare said, the 5.4 V8 is for soccer moms and someone who needs a "people mover"....that's it. The V10 will meet and exceed your needs and expectations.
Suprisingly, according to my RV forum, the V-10 gets better gas mileage towing most anything vs. the V-8. Go figure.
