I've search the threads, but they aren't really clear whether they did or how they actually did it. I'd like to add a visor lcd, but no installer wants to touch it. I did take it apart and there are no rca plug outlets, all I see is a ribbon type connect that leads to the 7" screen. Has anyone been successful of adding a visor lcd or extra lcd screens for that matter with the factory DVD unit that the EX's come with? I'm sure you'll be answering a lot of questions for a bunch of us.
i dont know how to hook it up but i have 2-8" monitors pre installed in tan visors the size of the smaller ones in the x brand new i would let go for $275 shipped, bought them for my x but i all ready have 5 tv's in it decided not to use the visor ones! i was going to put them where the smaller ones went and use the large visor to hide them!
I just had a visor lcd installed today, in the little secondary visor so the big one will cover it. The installer opened up the stock monitor and daisy-chained to the second monitor. All stock dvd player hardware. I selected a second monitor with two video inputs so I can add another dvd player for the front passenger or a back-up cam for me...or all three, with an additional a/b switch. - Ken S.
Thanks Ken, that is the answer I was looking for. Did you actually take a look at his work and see how it was done and finally how much did the labor cost you, I'm getting quoted $250.00.(too high if you ask me)
I had a lot done as "catch -up" after the first owner had the system butchered a bit to add a 3.5 plug for his iPod (which I love). I don't know what the breakout is for the screen but I'll ask when I see the final bill tonight. -Ken
OK, got the truck back. Visor looks great! Some issues: he said the diesel engine "noise" interference (maybe heightened since this screen is at the front?) combined with the combined low signal output of the stock dvd player caused some interference with the 2nd monitor, causing lines. He had to put in a filter and it looks OK. He said the picture will be more clear when I install a second aftermarket dvd player for the front passenger...or an in-dash pop-up to replace the current aftermarket head unit that does not have a dvd player. It's second dvd out will be more clear than the stock one.
He charged $135 labor to install the second screen, daisy chaining it to the stock unit. That does NOT include building the monitor into the visor. If your $250 includes building the monitor into the visor, I'd say that was a good deal. I think they charged me $150 in labor o install the monitor in the visor.
I did something to the visor taking it out or he did putting it back in. It moves clunky...with detents and squeaks when moved. I may have bent a bracket inside the visor in my rush and he may have made it worse putting back in. I'll have to play with it a bit. Otherwise, I'm happy.
The installer made the good point that yanking the stock DVD and installing an aftermarket overhead unit would have been simpler and provided better pictures to both screens, but I just got the truck and didn't have the heart. It has a very clean stock interior, except for the head unit. So I wanted to keep it that way. But I can see where the stock dvd player is at it's limits. Obviously not meant to be tweaked. Barely enough signal to support two screens and not enough to deal with a diesel unless there's a filter. -Ken S.
ken, i have an aftermarket, DIRECTED AUDIO dvd player and i am running 2-8"flip downs for the third row seat, 2-7" in the seat for the second row, and an 8" solid mount under the radio. all monitors are alpine. no lines in the screens or anything. also have x-box hooked up. i have an alpine switcher box so i can actually watch 5 different things at the same time if i had 3 other sources. one thing-each screen. all are independant or i can watch the same thing on all the monitors.
So Ken, we can remove the just the stock dvd player and put a aftermarket dvd player in its place so that we can do what so many of us want to do? What are some of the units available out there that would fit in it's place? I believe Adelphi makes the Ford dvd's. That would make more sense to replace the stock with an aftermarket with rca outputs for additional lcd's.
jscarb, I'd be interested in those visors you have. I'm currently installing a full blown small form factor desktop computer in my '02 Excursion, and a couple of extra screens would do the trick. Are they complete replacements for the mini (second) visor? If so, send me an email and we'll see if we can put something together. Thx.
