A '94 computer won't work properly in a '97.

OBD-II is more sophisticated than OBD-I and has more emission system monitors.

Not bad, if you are good with wiring. My suggestion would be to pull everything out of the '97 and put it in the '94. The more you can use, the better. It's a slow process, you'll need a shop manual of some sorts.

Should be simple enough, unplug the wire harness (held on with a bolt). IIRC there are a couple screws or bolts that hold the PCM in place, take them off and and then pull the unit out.

Use only the BARE 97 engine and hope everything hooks up properly to the 94 harness. The 94 model, outside of Kali, won't have a crank position sensor. Just leave that missing piece unconnected on the 97 engine. If it's a 3.slow you're hooking up, you have to pop a distributor in place of the coil packs that came in for 95 model year. A 4.0L might be a relative no sweat swap since it's always had coil packs.

That is the only way to pull this off, by just using the bare engine.

After 95, Rangers used an electronic speedometer, deleting the cable, so that's just one issue (of many) you'd face crossing OBD1 and OBD2 together.

You're heading down a bad road, get the correct ECM for the 97.

Never mess with computers. Use the right one man, be more trouble than you'll want to get in to.
