i have a 99 f-250 with a v-10. auto trans. i have a knocking noise but doesnt appear to be coming from the engine. wondering if anyone has trouble with flywheels? it knocks at idle if not in gear. put it in gear it knocks but it goes away when you accelerate.then it will come back when you let off the gas.ford told me to pull the trans and see if the bolts on the crank loosend up. torque converter bolts are tight and cant see any cracks yet. the trans has been replaced with a ford rebuilt. truck has 140,000 miles
thanks
Could be the flexplate coming loose from the crankshaft, but I've also heard of the flexplate cracking around the crankshaft bolts, but I've heard that only once.
If the flexplate is tight to the crank and the converter bolts are tight and the tranny is tight to the block it very well could be a main bearing knock.
They tend to knock under no load and quiet down when under a load. The crank is forced down against the bearing cap under load so no knock.
i tryed to listen with the screwdriver trick on the oil pan, but there was no noise there, also listened to both sides of the block too, and no noise. but i also tryed the bellhousing and didnt hear it there. very confusing.
Yes they have the stator and rotor bearings go bad and the vanes hit internally.
There was also a TSB awhile back on the torque converter drain plug coming loose and hitting the back of the block webbing as it spins.
If this tranny was replaced, chk all bolts to the back of the engine from the tranny maybe they frogot to torque them down right.
