Rear blinker/ brake light issue....

Hello....

Just picked up a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport (newer body-style)

Here's my problem:

The rear driver's-side brakelight/ turn signal will not light-up or flash. The front left turn signal blinks but the rear left doesn't. Also, when I use the brakes, the rear left brake light doesn't light up. (the same bulb/filament is used for both I believe) ALL the parking lights work--including the rear left.

The front left turn signal works and the turn indicator arrow on the dash lights up and blinks very fast. The right-side turn signals work 100% OK. The reverse lights work 100%.

Here's what I have done/ replaced:

The rear left dual filament bulb. The rear-left bulb socket. I checked the front left turn signal bulb (dual filament) and it works 100%.

Not sure what to do next....

Anyone have this problem?

Can anyone make a suggestion(s) as for what to do next?

Thanks everyone!

I assume you have replaced the bulb and it still doesn't work. Use a test light and see if you are getting power to the socket. If not, start tracing wires.

there are 3 parts on the light. the part where you put the light bulb in at, and locks in to your tail light will go bad, it unplugs from the wire. It's L-shaped they are around 20.00 bucks.

Blinker issues

Hello....

On the hazards lights...only three work/blink. The two fronts bulbs blink and the rear right light blinks. The rear left one does not. This is the one that won't blink at all. Also, it won't "light up" when I'm on the brakes. The two green arrow lights on the dash blink as they should while the hazards are on--it's got the normal blinking pattern.

Also, it won't "light up" when I'm on the brakes....

I have replaced the rear light bulb and the "L" bulb socket already.

I'm thinking that it's got to be either something under the dash, or a possible short in the wire harness??

Anyone got a link/ info on the wire schematics for this '01 Explorer sport?

Thanks.....

Have you verified with a test light that you are definitely not getting power to the socket? Possibly, you could be getting power to it and if you have a grounding problem, then the light(s) still won't work.

Getting power back there.....

Hello....

I've tested all the lines back on the rear-left brake light harness....

The ground line works, the two positive lines (parking light line & the brake/ turn signal line) are good too.

I tested the brake light/ turn signal line-wire from the rear harness all the way to where the front driver's side kick-panel is....I found the wire harness there and traced the line/wire. It's tests good with a volt meter.....

I cannot see where the wire/line goes from there as the dash is too tight and everything gets in the way....

I did just replace the blue hazzard relay with a new OEM one from the local dealership. This didn't fix it either....I still cannot figure out what the problem is....this one's got me stumped.

Can anyone make further suggestions?

Thanks....

Patrick, your trouble is probably a faulty turn indicator switch. The switch is common to both the turn indicators and the brake lights.

When the brake lights are on and the turn signal is activated, the switch overrides the brake light on that side, so the same bulb filiment can be used for both.

IIRC, the switch modules are about $70, and not too hard to replace; just a matter of removing the steering wheel trim.

You need a GOOD set of wiring diagrams for your 01

Yours might be different, but heres how the trn signals on a 97 are wired. From the multifunction switch a single wire feeds a splice. One wire from the splice feeds the front turn signals, the other feeds the rear. If yours is wired the same the multi switch is OK.

Does your 01 have the lamps out warning on the dash?

Does the left rear flash when you lock or unlock it with your remote?

Hello.....

Yeah, I got a haynes book coming my way. Should have it here in a couple more days.

On my '01 Explorer, there's NO lamps out waring on the dash.

When I use the keyless entry remote, all lights flash. The two rears, and the two fronts. I believe that it's the parking lights that are flashing not the brake lights though.

What do you think?

S4Patrick, I still think you have a faulty multi-function switch (turn indicator switch). See my earlier post.

Ford has had lots of problems with this switch. Usually they start smoking when they fail. Your's has an open circuit or poor ground, etc, on the left side of the circuit, affecting both the brake light and turn signal on that side.....

Hmmm.....

Well that's good to hear, as the local dealer has one in stock here in MI. The price is $56.00. I'm going to pick it up tonight.....I can't imagine it being too hard to install. Just remove the steering column covers and unmount?

Any tips or tricks on the R & R of this part?

Thanks thus far....

~Patrick

Since the bulb does light up when you use the remote, the bulb socket does have a good ground. So thats not the problem.

If you had the "2001 Explorer sport trac/sport wiring daigrams", it would take you about 30 seconds to look at the wiring diagram & see if the multi-function switch is bad.

The wiring diagrams in a Haynes manual are better than nothing. So when you get your Haynes, check them out.
