i use my78 f250 for mostly offroading and it has 36' swamper tsl's. i have had a problem with the seals leaking by in the steering box and new ones only last a month. i was wondering if i had a cooler and filter for the p/s pump if that might help?
A cooler never hurts but I don't think that's the source of your problem. If the heat build up was enough to destroy your seals the fluid would be badly burnt too. Most likely the issue is contaminents in your PS fluid. A filter would definitely be a wise investment. If you go to Napa and ask them for a generic auto tranny filter to be used on the return line (3/8" inlet and outlet) they can look one up for you. It's a Raybestos canister that works perfect for PS systems. Torque1st has also posted a part number for a WIX PS filter in the FAQ's at the top of the 73-79 forum but I haven't been able to track that down anywhere in town.
Btw, if you do want a cooler I used a tranny cooler I pulled from a Ford at a junk yard and just cleaned it really good. It's probably 6"x12", tube style with fins. Don't use the plate style coolers for power steering as they tend to trap air.
