Well, I have a 77 f-150 and am trying to figure out what gear ratio I have.
I jacked up the rear, had the truck in neutral, and spun the tire and the driveshaft only turned 1.5 maybe 2 times at most. I tried this numerous tiems and it always came out the same.
I know the gearing couldn't possibly be that high, so any ideas? It doesn't turn very good with the tire, any chance the rear end could be going bad? The truck has been ran pretty hard by previous owners. In fact, one owner let the breather tube come off and let it leak fluid so it could be low on that. I replaced the breather tube.
If you guys think the rear could be going out, what would be best way to go about getting another? I'd like to get 4.10's front and rear but money is tight. Find a new 4.10 3rd member for rear already set up then find a new dana 44 front with 4.10s in decent shape. All brakes on the 2 axles are good so I could use them for parts.
A lot of guys will get confused by this because of the open carrier. If both tires aren't spinning evenly it'll mess up your calculations. Or you can always leave one tire planted on the ground, just jack up one side and spin it and then double the number of turns that it takes and this will be your approximate ratio. So if it took 1.5 turns exactly and the other tire was stationary you'd be at about 3:1, etc. Dennis advice about spinning 10 times is good advice. Anytime you're checking the ratio by eyeballing it, the more turns you use the more accurate you'll be.
