Gearing

Well tonight I started thinking bout my rear gears.. With my lift and 35's I'm running about a final gear of 3.56 opposed to the factory 3.73 I had.. I'm highly considering 4.10 but I want to know something.. Right now I'm pulling a solid 13mpg with my lift and 35s.. If I move up to 4.10 to get my final gear back to 3.73 will my mpg drop? I imagine it'll make the engine work less to turn the tires..

If changing the back gears out, I have to change the front gears too right? Anyone recommend a shop to get the front/rear gears I need?

Storm,

MPG should be about the same or a little higher than you are currently getting now.

Yes you must re-gear both axles on a 4WD.

4.10 would be correct for your current tire size. But... if you are thinking about going larger (ie 37) in the future then think about 4.56 gears instead.

I prob wont go 37s.. For the jest of price.. 35s run me bout 200 a piece.. 37s would put me up to 300 a piece.. I'm pretty set with the size I have now and I'm happy If I decide to do 37s couple years down the road I won't mind paying to regear.. But I feel now I need to..

Storm,

Talk to the guys at "Randy's Ring & Pinon" that have alot of experience and good advice.
www.ringpinion.com/

Your truck has the following axles;

Front: Dana 60, 9.75" ring gear
1.3" Axle shaft diameter
30 Spline
2-pinion
Pinon Mounting - Above Center

Rear: Visteon, 10.5" ring gear
1.5" Axle shaft diamieter
35 Spline
3-pinion
Pinion Mounting - Overhung

Plan on spending about $500 on parts and about $800-1000 for install.

Talk to Randy's Ring & Pinon, they may also be able to refer you to a good shop in your area. You definitely want to find a shop with alot of experience re-gearing axles and with a good reputation.

You may want to ask down in the Texas section of the forum for recomendations on a good shop. Also call the guys at "Truck Toyz that did BearHunters truck and see who they recommend for axle work.

Storm beware, you will easily drop $2500+ on a gear swap for both axles. I checked into it and NO ONE and I mean -NO ONE- would offer a warranty as soon as I drove off the property. With a diesel I don't know if I'd swap gears, a gasser... sure... but the diesel is gonna be ok... you'll need ring, pinion, a different carrier if you go to 4.56's, the shim kit, bearing kit... parts will run you about $6-900 depending on brand. Auburn/Yukon make tough sets of gears, however.

Storm,

Mis-typed Front axle Ring gear, should be 9.00-inch.

Sorry about that.

Look up 'West Coast Differentials' in Sacramento, CA...just put 4.56 gears in my 99 F350 yesterday.

You don't need a new carrier from 3.73 to 4.56 gears.

I had them do the labor - one day service.

Gears and labor was quoted @ about $1200 (about $1300 w/sales tax OTD) using your old bearings, but with new seals.

I had a new Tru-Trac LS diff put in the rear, which pushed the quote up to about $1800 +...plus Sales tax...about $1925 OTD.

When torn down, my rear bearings were pitted (175K miles) due to mileage, so I needed a bearing kit, and add'l labor for the set-up of the bearings...came to about $2350 out the door with sales tax.

So you can see about what you'll have to pay in the real world...I got a quote from 4Wheel Parts, and they were about the same, but I don't think they're as experienced as the shops that just do gears...IMHO

Had them put on my new 08 Ford alum Diff cover to finish off the job...cooooool!

Personally....with 35s and a PSD, I'd stick with the 3.73s unless you tow heavy and often....

Well I'm certainly gettin jacked here in B-ham, because I can't find a 4x4 gear swap to 4.56's for under $2500, and they say as soon as you drive off the property, it's NOT warrantied, unless it breaks on the property before you drive off. This is from 4 places too...

Yeah, gear swap should be $1600-1800 tops for a quality gear set (Precision Gear is my brand of choice) and master install kits along with gear oil.

Now, for a LSD or locker..that would be more, but not much more if any on labor.

It's important to follow the recommended gear break-in procedure as well.

I don't know why they wouldn't offer any warranty.....although I know a lot of shops around here won't even touch diffs.

Hey Storm....I have 3:73 gears on my 7.3L with a superchip powerprogrammer. No problems when towing the boat which is approx. 8000 lbs. I just turn down the superchip to only a 60hp gain when towing. Empty I get 18-19mpg hwy, 13-14mpg city. Towing I get around 11-12 I think??? Been awhile.....man I gotta hit the lake!!! Oh yea....I used to have a 97 F250 with the 7.3L, with 4:10 gears, did okay even with the 35's, but not as strong at the 2000 7.3 even with 3:73's! I'd use the money for something else if I was you.....

I have 3.73 gears, 35 inch BFGs, and an SCT tuner and I feel like I should go with 4.10s for my truck. Every shop I spoke to suggested 4.10s as they would get me back to stock and then some. I.e. I'd be running lower RPMs on the freeway and around town, so better fuel economy. I went from around 18-19 mpg to about 15-16 mpg with the lift and my BFGs. So unless there's a better way to get my trucks speedo and power back to normal, a regear is in my future.
