the minimum is when the tread bar is visable . but even then my tires were dangerous way before that.

My rule of thumb regarding tire replacement is that if I'm wondering if I should replace them, it's time.

Wet and snowy road tire performance declines quite a bit as tire tread wears. You could be legal, but not necessarily safe.

I usually replace at 4/32 even though the law is usually 2/32 in most areas. A few hundred bucks is not worth my life or my wife's; or even someone elses for that matter.

Performance Degrading

A Tire engineer out in Akron explained to me that the tiny tread indentions are critical for wet/snow. Those degrade faster than the deep treads. So before you get to the wear bars, you are suffering a degradation of grip in those wet conditions. I am no Michael Schumacher, but I always notice the grip loss on curvy freeway on ramps where I am trying to accelerate up to speed and I know its time for new rubber.

Good luck on yours.

GET NEW TIRES! lol conti's are the worst lol. If you can afford it get some decent ATs or M/S tires, at the min all weathers (depending on your location). I had nothing but crappy handling and unsatisfied with em. Have some Big O A/T Big Foots and im happy as a clam. But if you are talking safety on the Contis you have now they are right with the tread bar, its minimum but not really safe at all.

Similarly what would you recommend for someone in Massachusetts? I know I would need something that could handle snow. I was considering some Michelins and the cost was $700. Is that about par?

I've been really satisfied with Michelin LTX M/S tires. If you want something with more off road ability (even though the Michelins are not bad) you can go with the Dueler A/T Revo tires from Bridgestone.

Agreed. Good ones there for A/T and M/S. Justing some Agressive M/S like osteo said work wonders. For florida some A/Ts will do fine for round about driving if you do the off road bit. you dont have to worry about snow so dont need M/S unless you plan on Long trips to a ski resort lol.
