hi, every time i start out from a stop, and accelerate moderately or heavily, my 4x4 shifter that is on the floor, rises up about 2-3 inches then goes back down once the transmission shifts into second gear. if i floor it at highway speeds, it will rise up again, but only about an inch. i have the 4.6L with an automatic trans. i was wondering if something is wrong or does this happen to most 4x4s or maybe a mount is broken? im lost on this one.

Check for a bad motor mount on drivers side. I believe you will find that it has failed. It is not the rare and even more common in 4x4 running big tires with stock gears because of increase drive line torque. You might find this interesting. The first link shows the effect of tires size on pulling power and the second one show the amount of motor mount torqe requires to tow up a hill. Granted, you are not towing but when accelerating, you are put a lot of torque on drive line to the same effect more or less.
I just got the truck checked out this morning by the dealership. The motor and transmission mounts were all in place and in great shape. the sifter just does that. the tech who looked at my truck said his does the same thing too. good news i guess it was better to know though instead of having something go wrong in the future.

I do not buy it. Set parking brack hard on truck and place in gear and fold brakes firmly too and will hood up and standing BESIDE it (not on front of it), have someone apply some throttle in drive and watch is engine raises on driver side. THis is not normal even if it may be a common problem. You have a bad mount regardless of what dealer said. I have seen this before.
I have to agree with SnoMan here. There is NO REASON for the shifter to move that much. Something is seriously wrong with a mount somewhere. Check the mounts that support the t-case and tranny if you know the engine mounts are in good shape. That lever should never move more than 1/4" max on accelleration and even at that only with a truck spitting out good power and hooking up good. That much movement in your drivetrain is also going to eat up u-joints.
ill try out what he said about the motor mount. the truck has been like this for 6 months now. i hadnt ever really thought much of it before. but if it was a mount, wouldnt it have gotten worse by now? it definately does concern me though. i mean the truck used to go off road every other day, i used it for landscaping and hauling dirt, rocks etc.

Once the rubber seperates it is broken. Most mounts have interlocks on them to prevent the engine from moving too far. In the 60's they were not like that on most mounts and I have a rodded up old 62 Plymouth in 69 and 70 that when I got into good once the motor mount let go and the engine kinda hit the hood. Not too cool. It was so bad with some big blck chevy cars that the had a recall to fit torque strap/cable to engine to limit travel incase of mount failure. Now it is built into most mounts
