So I am rebuilding a motor to go into my f100 and the machine shop guy says he has a set of Mid rise heads for a 390 (off of a 64 t-bird) that someone dropped off and never picked up.
Anyone know the specs on a set of mid rise heads? Will they fit with a new intake?
I guess I am really needed some info on "mid rise" heads.
FE heads come in low, medium and high rise ports. There are also Tunnel port, but that's pretty rare.
High rise is generally not used for a real streetable engine and the intakes sit high enough it would interfere with many stock hoods. It was one of their race designs.
Low and Medium rise are the more common types. It all has to do with the floor height of the intake ports. And for the most part you want to match up low rise heads with low rise manifolds and medium rise heads with medium rise manifolds. This matches the runners up so you get a smooth transition between intake manifold and intake ports.
Medium risers are probably about the best for a nice powerful good street engine. Better flow than low risers in most situations.
Medium rise heads should be fine if you match them with a medium rise type of intake manifold.
You can interchange low and medium rise to a certain extent, but you can't mix high rise with anything else, and Tunnel port is it's own thing, too.
