After a rather disappointing day at the local tire shops, I would like to know what y'all are running on your trucks to replace the Continentals that came stock?
I have a stock (no lift) 2005 F350 PSD SRW 4X4 truck running 275/70R18E Continentals on the factory 18" rims.
I am open to new tires, or new wheels and tires, but I want something with a more aggressive tread design like a M/T or aggressive A/T and I also want to stay in the E load range since I tow a trailer in the summertime.
I don't plan on doing a lot of crashing through the underbrush (at least not on purpose!) but I do need something that will self clean the snow come winter - Conty's do NOT!
So far there still isn't much out there. The guys at Les Schwab only have the Conti's to replace them with for now. If I knew now what I know about the 18" I never would have ordered them. It's been a year and not many options.
Well I finally think I've hit on a plan to solve my problem...
I think I'll go with a new set of 17"x8" American Eagle wheels and Cooper Discoverer SST Radial tires.
This will give me the E rating I want, they are virtually identical in diameter so no speedo problems, and I can get the agressive, self-cleaning tread design I was after all along. I'm also going to have them siped for additional traction.
The 17" wheels also opens up a wider variety of tires for the future so this dilema won't happen again!
cooper also has a variety in the 18" rim option, i have a post floating either here regarding this and the wide variety of 18" tires that ARE out there. there are many many options. easiest way to see most options is to browse ebay, go through ebay, car & truck parts, car & truck, wheels & tires, tires, 18", then start looking for what you want. some will not be here, but you get the idea. id rather spend a couple hours searching for the right tire for my rim than spend a couple hondo finding rims that will do. 18" rims are unique you paid a price for these keep them!
05F350CC,
I called Walmart to see if they knew of anything for a replacement for the conticrap. They did some searching and found that Michelin has a LTX 265-75-18 E rated available for about $210 a copy. As I understand tire sizing, that would mean a slightly narrower tire at about the same height. The LTX is a good tire for snow and ice on highways. It probably would not be a good "off road tire", but sounds like it would suit your needs very well.
They also offer another michelin in that approximate size that was called an SUV (or something like that) for a little less cash ($185 maybe?) but in my experience the LTX would probably be a better tire.
The guy also stated that they were a 65000 mile tire. I'm not sure what the mile rating is on the contis but mine are about done at 21000 miles. I'm trying to hold out for more options but replacement is about inevidable with the winter snow baring down.
Good Luck, Tim
edit: oh yeah, they would be a special order, not in stock
I'm not sure what the mile rating is on the contis but mine are about done at 21000 miles.
I haven't had a snow experience since I park my PSD when the ground is white but I have 22,000+ miles on my Contis with more than 12,000 of that towing a 14,000# fiver. My tires are nowhere near "done."
Why not the ProComp Extreme ATs? They come in a 325 60 18 and are E rated. I am considering these as the replacement to the Contis.
Just went and checked these out. Damn nice tires...
Can someone verify that my logic is correct here.
The stock Conti's are approx. 33.2 in diameter and I want to go with the ProComp 35" ATs which say they are 34.75 in diameter.
Diff of 1.55"
Half of that diameter increase will be above the hub, half below, so these tires should raise the height of the truck approx. .775" or just over 3/4"???
Is that correct? I have to be careful because I fly alot and the parking garage at the airport has only 7' clearance. With stock tires I have just over an Inch to spare. I should still fit fine if the above sizing calculations are correct.

Look at the ProComp Exteme AT's, they are different than the ProComp AT's. They have a 325 60 18 tire that is 33.4 inch in diameter and is Load Range E

I would prefer the larger tire. And a little extra height would be great too. I just want to make sure the logic of my calculation is correct. If it is, I can get the bigger tire and still fit where I need to fit.
Calculations are correct. You should also update the tire size in the computer so that mileage, speedo, and shift points are corrected for the larger size tire.
