Can anyone tell me what needs to be done to fix worn front sway bar bushings? I just got back from the dealer on two problems. The first is the C.O.P. on #4, and they also said that the front sway bar bushings are worn fairly bad. Is this an "at home" fix with standard home tools, or is this something better left to a professional mechanic?
Get a set of silicone bushings - they'll last a long time - the stock rubber ones fail pretty quickly. They're not hard to do - no special tools required. Just a little elbow grease & time.
Part of the sway bar bushing fix is a "at home with hand tools" and part of it is a "at home with arbor press" job.
The bushing kit you want is Energy Suspension part No. 4.5186G
This set is SuperDuty specific and can be gotten from NAPA Auto parts. My NAPA charged me $38.90 for the set. Because they are polyurethane they are the last set you will ever change. They are also formulated with graphite so they will be sqeak free and have a durometer that is very close to the OEM spec. They are not rock hard like the aftermarket red colored Energy Suspension parts on the rack at AutoZone.
My sway bar links are clunking. Upon closer inspection it looks like the exhaust manifold may be in the way of the bolt on the upper end of the link on the passenger side. Is there a way around this?
On my '02 V-10 I had no problem with the upper mount for the sway bar link, it's very close, your wrench will clank against the exhaust pipe, but it's 100% 'do-able'.
If I remember correctly, the pass. exhaust pipe is even clearanced for the upper link..
