I'm going to be installing a new main gas tank in the rear of my 73 f250. I plan on keeping my saddle tanks for long hauls. My question is. What is the best way to maintain the aux tanks so they don't get in bad shape or does it matter? I would like to leave them empty if they wont rust.
I would like to know about this too....I just bought my truck, and my saddle tanks were obviously not used....it took a couple of tanks and fuel filters before I can run off at least ONE of the saddle tanks.... I still have not even tried the other one yet.....
If you could rig a drain in the bottom, it might be ok. But if you leave a little bit thats not picked up by the engine, it will certainly go stale and clog up your fuel system the next time you used it.
Keep the tank full of gas, that is the only way to prevent it from rusting. Just use both tanks all the time. That way your gas won't go bad. Or better yet put a 460 in there, and you won't be able to keep gas in any number of tanks
Probably the simplist and cheapest thing to do is to drive on one tank untill you usually fillup (1/4 tank?). Then when you do fill up fill the other tank and start running on it. Just keep alternating tanks as you go. You will always have fresh gas in both tanks. Each tank will probably be filled every other week (depending on how much you drive). And you will always have a 1/4 tank emergency reserve in the tank you aren't using.
