Thumbs up Winter tire report

I know there have been a bunch of threads lately regarding winter tire choices. I got mine put on last week and thought I'd give my impressions. I have an 05 F-350 4x4 with 18" rims and infamous Continental racing slicks . Because there aren't many 18" tire choices, I got a set of 17" rims.

Last week I got a set of 4 Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT265/70R17 winter tires. They are 10-ply (load range E). They are studded. I paid $883 total (including tax), which is quite expensive. They are about 1.5" smaller in diameter than the stock rubber, but still the same size as stock F-250s.

We've had a few snowfalls of about 6" over the past 5 days here in northern Maine. So far, these tires are very impressive. I haven't even had to put the truck in 4x4 yet with these tires. It handles much better in snow in 2 WD now than it did in 4WD with the Continentals. I had these same tires on my F-150 and they were great. I was wondering how they would be on a bigger truck with very stiff suspension and a tendancy to slide around. They seem pretty much the same. I will get a much better taste of how they work in more snow during the upcoming months, but so far they are rock solid.

I would definitely recommend these tires for anyone who needs decent winter tires. They come pre-drilled for studs, but are studded by the vendor if permitted in that state.

I'm thinking about replacing the 18 inch contis with the BFG 285/65/18's... I know that they aren't the same weight rating, but I think they will be plenty. D load range and 3145lbs per tire.... That should be plenty, I think. Anyone else has an opinion please let me know. I'd like to keep the same tire height and that's why I'm not going back to the 17" rim... Plus I won't have to buy new wheels. I like the way the 18's look.

I just did the calc.... 3145lbs per tire is still more than the GVW of the truck... The Truck is 11,400 lbs and the total weight for all four BFG's would be 12,580lbs... Looks good to me!

FYI-
Just had my Contis siped last week for $60...night and day difference.
As good as a M&S tire? Probably not, but an improvement noetheless for those of you that don't want to fork out the big $$ for new sneakers.
