Will a gear change make a difference?

I have a 96 F-150 with the 300 6 in it, 3.55 gears, M5OD standard. I am going to put 33's on it (I seriously need the clearance). I understand that the highest gear change that I can go to without changing the carrier is 3.73. If I notice that the truck does not have enough jam to wheel with these tires, would the change from 3.55 to 3.73 be a big difference?

Also, is it just the dana 44 carrier that can not handle a 4.10, or is the 8.8 the same? Basicly, can I get away with just buying one carrier? Thanks.

The 8.8 will handle 4.10s fine. Ford axles don't have carrier breaks.

The Dana 44 does have a carrier break though, and it won't make much of a difference by swapping to 3.73s.

I would just get a front pig with 4.10s from a junkyard axle. Probably cost $100.

even so, if you don't want to go the junkyard route, you could get a new carrier, about $75 bux I believe.

You won't even notice a difference from 3.55 to 3.73. 4.10 would be the way to go.

EDIT I see Bremen already told you what I just said. I'm slow sometimes. You can find carriers on ebay for $20-40 all the time. Just watch what they charge to ship as those pigs can be heavy.

3.55 is right where you want to be with 33's and a 300 with a stick.
An auto or a small v8 and you'd want 4.10's

Thanks for all the tips. I will give it a go with the 3.55's and if it is a prob, then 4.10's it is. Thanks for the info on the different carriers.

488's! I love them in my 8.8/Dana combo with 33's (not the tranny or t-case from a ford though).

A few things here, if you have a reverse rotation D44, there is no carrier split and also with a standard D44 with a 3 series carrier, (for 3.73 an below) you get a "thick" 4.09, 4.30, 4.56. and 4.88 to bolt right in without a carrier swap. If you click on link below you will find a tire size and gear ratio calculator that I have posted on line.

Snoman you would have been better off not showing your ignorance, A rev rotation D44 uses exactly the same carrier as any other D44, you can even take the carrier out of a Scout D44 rear axle and put it into a Ford front or a chebbie D44, and they have exactly the same carrier split as any other. And you can not get "thick" cut gears clear to 4.88 to fit a series 3 carrier expecially in rev cut gears (lot less choices on Rev cut gears since the only thing they fit is Ford HP fronts) I believe that 4.09 is the fartherst you can go with standard cut gears, and on the rev only go to 3.89.

. . then you live in a mystical world where axles spin backwards. If you actually do some research then you'd know there's no such thing as a mystical "Reverse Rotation" Dana axle. They are reverse CUT gears. The rotation is no different, only the cut of the gears so that you're running on the drive side of the tooth and not the coast side.

Don't you be stealing me lucky charms!

If I see a truck going down the road draggin its rear wheels which are spinning backwards and swerving into the ditch due to torque steer I'll know who it is

HaHa....I need to snap a pic of this car in Denton that was chopped and now has two front ends (with complete interior dash). That is part of the mystical world!

Not according to my sources. You know you can disagree without being nasty and I must really threaten you in some way or something. BTW, reverse rotaion gears are availble from atleast 3.54 to 5.38 for the D44 and standard D44 gears go from at least 3.07 to 5.89. THe HD 44 used in Vette, Viper and Grand Cherokee is limited to about 3.54 to 4.56 at this time. I will not insult you because you were in error either.

I had a 95 F-150 with the 5spd and 3:55 gears. I put 33's on it, and didn't hardly notice any change in power. Only thing I noticed was the speedo was off. I would just try the 3:55's and 33's, you may like it. If you had a 4spd tranny, or step up to 35's, then I would go for 4:10's.
