Hello to everyone from Venezuela South America, western Michigan University Alumni. I have a 97 4X4 explorer, in my case 4X4 high works but 4x4low doesnit I only hear clicks................ Any suggestions??
yours is a classic case of the shift motor not working, you will have to remove it from the T/C, open it up and clean the contact disk inside,
I also have a 2002 Explorer with 35k miles that suddenly lost its 4X4 functionality. When the control buttons were pushed no dash lights lit up and no 4X4, just like in other posts. After checking all of the 4X4 fuses (they were okay, the last one being the fuse in the power distribution box) I opened the passenger door which caused a loud - rapid clicking sound behind the glove box - where the control module is mounted. The sound stopped after turning the ignition on and off.
The next time I went to drive the vehicle it acted as though the transfer case was stuck in low gear, at 25 mph the tach showed about 2500 rpm and the speedometer showed 60 mph. Repulling the fuses and disconnecting the battery did not correct the new symptoms.
The bottom line - a flatbed truck ride to the dealership and a new 4X4 control module ($451, parts, labor, and taxes) and I now have a working 4X4.
my 2001 sport track is doing the same thing. a buddy works for a dealer and is helping me out. i found a wire short on the 4x4 motor mounted on the transmission and replaced. still no 4x4, we think it is the modual on the passenger wall buy the door.
After reading this thread, it sounded like the answer to my problem. I ordered the part from Fast Parts Network, LLC for $200. I put it in yesterday and it works fine now. I had to remove the mounting bracket to get to the back screw, just like someone else recommended.
I love this forum!

I replaced my control module fairly easily! I was told it could not be repaired. The replacement involved removing a few wiring harnesses inserting the module and reconnecting the wiring. If I recall, it is simple to remove the module, just study the bracket before you start. I think there is a screw and the module swings out. Good luck
