I'm currently removing my rear quarter panels and am burning up a lot drill bits drilling through these spot welds. Rather than keep buying new ones every 10 spot welds I'm considering buying a Drill Doctor. Has anyone had any success doing this? Any other options? I'm using Dewalt 5/16" drill bits and at the current rate I'll go through about seven per quarter panel. At $7 a piece. I'd appreciate any useful opinion.
the drill doctor is a great tool. very well thought out. www.drilldoctor.com they have a new version out. mine is great trouble free and has saved me a ton of cash. it will even resharpen broken bits. unless you are skilled at the bench grinder the drill doctor is the way to go. i learned on a bench grinder but the drill doctor is so much faster, safer and more precise. www.lowes.comwww.homedepot.comwww.amazon.com/drilldoctorwww.acehardware.com . hope that helps you
I googled Spot Weld Drill Bits and came up with a bunch of hits.
These are designed for spot welds, unlike B&D or DeWalt standard bits.
As for Drill Doctor. . . . I bought the 750 a while back. I used it for the first time, today. It worked like a dream on some very old bits of my Dad's. (Both 118° and 135° bits.)
I've been using my 750 for almost a year and love it. I'm on my second diamond sharpening wheel but I use solid carbide drill bits to deep drill stainless and at 50 bucks a piece it keeps them nice and sharp. Sure beats spending a bunch of time with a grinder and a diamond hone.
I have had good experiences with my Drill Dr. After "getting the hang of it", I've had success sharpening both angles of drills. the diamond wheel on mine is reversible for extra life.
As someone already pointed out, DD has a new product line as of this summer. It's easier to use and gives you more options for bit angle, etc. I did a review of it in a recent tech article. It's not yet published, but here's my private copy:
if you use drill bits often it takes very little time for the drill doctor to pay for itself well worth buying, once you have one you will wonder how you even managed without it
Thanks for the responses guys, especially that link. I'm ordering one tomorrow! I've got six drill bits that need to be resharpened so that's already $42 less in drill bits that I'll have to buy. Thanks again!

My opinion is that you're paying too much for drill bits. Try $2 - $3 each quanties of 6 or more. One source is: http://www.mcmaster.com/
And with occasional sharpening they should be good for 100- 200 "spots".
Sharpening a 5/16 drill on a bench grinder shouldn't take more than 30 seconds each ..... JMHO
I just stopped by the ACE in town and they had the DD500 with case for $79. with a $10 rebate. Had to come home and check on line before I bought it. They had a half dozen or so. Gonna go back in the morning and pick one up. Get myself an early Xmas present.
We have had a DD 750 here at the shop for about 10 years now. The original had some wear on the cam surfaces and when I called about having it repaired, they just sent a brand new machine with case and video- at no cost! I can sharpen bits myself w/o it but my shop guys can use the DD and I don't have to go behind them. It does good on carbide as well. BTW, if those spot welds are hard (as they can be) you might want to use a cobalt or other hard bit to give you a few more welds per bit. Also, grind the angle on the bit at 135 deg. instead of 118 and it will last longer in most cases. good luck.
drill doctor is a unique company. i asked the lady on the helpline how long the carbide wheel should last. she said about 200 bit sharpenings. i said ok i guess i am past that point, where can i buy a new one? she said i will send one out today for you at no charge. i got it next day.
