2 things.

First, what engine is it? That's a lot of miles!

Second, I see you're from Clinton, TN. I used to work for Motor Products on Clinton Hwy in Powell. Small world, isn't it?

almost 170K on my daughter's 97 Ranger (same 2.3 liter 4 cylinder) and I've never had the valve cover off of it. Runs like a champ. It all the other little crap like the heater blend door, rear springs, power steering pump and that pesky little door switch that controls the courtesy light that keep getting me with this thing. Only real major work was a new clutch earlier this year. Great little trucks and great little engines.

Dont' want to be a stinker, but I currently own a Geo Metro, 1.0L 3cyl motor, 5 spd. I drive 100 miles a day, get 47MPG and that's cruising 75-80MPH on the freeway. Oh yeah, it has 272,000 miles on the original unopened engine, uses about 1/4 qt of oil in 3000 miles. With 3cyl, 1.0L motor, it gets driven HARD to get me from point A to B.

Point being that preventative maintenance and driving style goes a LONG way to making a car last.

1982 Datsun 200SX - donated after 289,000 miles on the original motor
1991 Nissan Sentra SE-R - currently at 157,000 miles on the original motor

So actually that engines not exactly dead, just a burnt valve! I've got dang near 310,000 on my 91 with the 2.3 now. These engines are remarkable. Replace that valve, heck replace all of them, and then take her past 400k!

these trucks are built to LAST, kinda like the energiser bunny, they keep going and going and going and going. I love the fact that these things last so long.

JD I agree man. If anyone gets on this forum and asked any questions about that 2.3 I tell them everything I know, and tell them these things last a long long time.

The only problems I've EVER had with mine was water got into the upper plug on the DIS pack, and glitched the DIS pack. A new one solved that problem. The echaust manifold cracked... which led to a hole. I replaced it, and in the process realized my EGR tube was cracked (which is cured the valve lifter tapping I thought I had.) Then just recently I realized my EGR was plugged up, so I replaced it, and now I have no CEL and she runs like a champ!

Although I am starting to worry. At idle you can hear a FAINT knocking noise... which I think might be the cam. Thats where the majority of the noise is coming from (thanks to my stethescope.)

I'm with you handyman, anyone asks anything about the 2.3L, or someone poses a question about a used truck with it, and I always mention how reliable and long lasting it is.

I also agree, preventative maintenance is the key to long engine life, though some last longer than others no matter.
