But it baffles me at the same time. You'd think that small of an engine into a good size little pickup would wear out quick. I mean I think we can all agree they are pretty underpowered... but they get the job done well!

And while people work on their higher-mileage V6s and V8s, those little I-4s are still happily driving along.

Exactly! I've got a 95 half ton with the 351 and E4OD with almost 219,000 miles on it. Engine runs good although is uses some oil, but still I trust my ranger more than that truck. If it wasnt 4 wheel drive and handy I'd drive my ranger all the time, but of course my ranger isn't 4 wheel drive, so in the winter, I hop in big Blue!

My daughter's little 4 banger does great but my little V-6 has been no slouch either. only 10,000 fewer miles than the 4-cylinder and it too runs great. I think theat most of them do pretty well if you perorm the proper maintenance on them.

I probably pretty naive and thought that most folks at least keep the oil changed. Thatwas until this past week.

I was dropping my wife's Jag off at the dealer for the free 40,000 mile service. While there, I was speaking to the service writer about the engine in my wife's car and what I could expect for engine life, etc. He told me about a car they had in there at that moment. The car's owner had not been changing oil or doing any preventative manitenance on the car. I could not believe this. Blowing off maintanence on a 4 year old Jaguar. Well the lower end on the engine was toast. Cost to replace the enigne at the dealer was going to be $17,000.00. OOOUUUCH!

This is not intneded to be a testimonial on poor Jaguar quality. They build a darn good engine and I can attest to that. Ours is surviving my wife and her "interesting" driving habits. It is intended to show that even good engines won't last long if not properly maintained.

Yeah maintenance is key. That outta be stamped somewhere on the block of all the new engines.
My friend got a 1990 Chevy Silverado with a 350. He immediately took it to have all the fluids flushed and changed. The oil...it was the ORIGINAL stuff. The guy had never changed it.
Needless to say, the crate engine will be here in a week or so. Good lookin' truck, the guy washed it all the time, sad he never took care of the engine.

I want my Ranger to get me through college, if it does that I will be more than satisfied.

lol I'm not going to college. Im a senior in high school now, but I am going to continue my career in the electrical field. Then I will get put through school (paid by company) and learn the commercial side of it all, which will rake in the big bucks. But I also plan on continuing my dad's construction business also. Many oppertunities open with my construction and farming...

I agree with you on the opportunities. I got a scholarship offer from Embry-Riddle after my JROTC Colonel wrote them a letter, and that was that. I'm not going to turn that down for anything. All I gotta do is finish and graduate HS and go there for two years. Only thing I've ever wanted to do in my life.

jeese, i didnt realize you two were so young! I"m a HS senior also. Lol, we should start our own thread.

As far as the dead ranger thing, i almost wish i had the 4 banger in my truck. My 94 4.0 burns oil like crazy. I think its bad valve guides/seals. That shouldnt be so much of a problem to replace, but someone put 99k on the thing before we got it, so they could have abused however they wanted. I know for a fact that sometimes i change my oil like 1000k miles too soon. Oh well, oil is cheap, new engines are not. Thats the fact.

I have the '94 4.0L and thankfully, no leaking oil. That being said, I baby my truck for the most part. Way ahead of the Ford maintenance schedules. Occasionally I'll get next to a rice burner from the HS and just have the urge to whip them, so off we'll go. It treats me fine every time. Love my truck to death.
I didn't realize there were so many other young ones on here either lol. The thread should be "teenagers in Rangers, stories of high schoolers gone rampant".

There was a thread started in the 87-96 f series forum about age of the people in there. Majority was 18-25 and many 13-17 i do believe.

As for the 4.0s, my buddy has one in his Ranger and he goes through 2 quarts of oil a week. Every other day his check oil light comes on, and it's time to fill it back up. Doesnt leak it, and it never smokes out the exhaust. Its a mystery oil problem. I do remember reading on here somewhere that the oil pan gasket has a tendency to blow out right by the exhaust pipe. Thus the oil will burn away on the exhaust and never hit the ground. Seems feasible to me!

Someone should start an age topic in the Ranger forum. I think you'd be suprised. Its amazing seeing how knowledgable some of our youth is today! See mom and dad! Not all teenagers are bad! lol.

lol exactly. Though mine seem to think that as much money as I spend on my truck.

EDIT: ok, why not. I'll start one!

yeah, me and my brother always get into that argument. I think it is stupid of him to spend 400$ on an xbox 360 and not even get one when they said he was going to get one. So he's going to pay one of his friends 440$ to buy their used xbox 360. I think its a worthless waste of money, then he comes back with all the money i'm spending on my truck and stuff. You can just never win i guess. My parents arent so bad since they see results from my truck. Check it out my F150 in my gallery, you can see why they might think i'm crazy
