88 vacuum pump revisited.

ok, i just put the new pump on, and get 24 inches at the booster, coffee can and vrv. trans still will not shift. not getting vacuum to the module, no matter how the vrv is adjusted. also on shut off, i loose all vacuum within 5 seconds.
any ideas???

You have a leak somewhere.
Start testing each line off the vacuum tree to find it.

After re-reading what you posted it looks like itr may be in the line down to the tranny.

ok, after re reading the adjustment info in the service manual for the thousandth time, i looked at the picture figure 4, and it seems that i may have the wrong vrv?? the book shows a vrv with an adjustment slot on both sides, but the one i have on the pump only has one adjuster slot, on the bottom front side. is this correct, or is the pic in the manual wrong??
also, i kind of misstated the vacuum issue. at idle, i have 24 inches to the trans module. but as soon as i open the throttle, it starts to go down, and by the time i am at 3/4 throttle there is only 2 inches, hence my statement that there is nothing going to the module.

btw, the reason for rehashing this is after the master and booster both went at the same time 2 weeks ago, i put the new vacuum pump on and tried to get the trans working properly. it is not a big deal, as i can let off to shift, but it is better to have it operating properly incase someone else uses the truck.

James posted this info once........

How to adjust VRV by James

You don't have the engine running for the test, you need to apply 20" vacuum to upper VRV port and attach vacuum gauge to lower VRV port. The lower port is the one that goes to tranny, the upper to vacuum pump.
You have to maintain 20" througout this test. If it drops off you need to pump it back up.
Remove throttle return spring, cycle throttle lever 5 times from idle to WOT. Make sure 20" vacuum is maintained on upper port side.
Move throttle so it is 0.515" (33/64") from wide open (they make a tool for this). Vacuum gauge should read from 6-8" of vacuum. If incorrect adjust VRV to 7".
Again apply 20" vacuum, cycle throttle from idle to WOT 5 times. Return to idle. Gauge should read at least 13".

It says if you can't get the 7" or the 13" to replace the VRV. If VRV checks out maybe the diaphragm (modulator), line from VRV goes to the vacuum diaphragm I believe. Can't find any adjustment for the diaphragm but I think there is a little.

Basically all you need for the test is a vacuum pump (handheld type), vacuum gauge and a ruler to measure 1/2" or a 33/64" drill bit in lieu of the .515" tool. And a screwdriver for any adjustment needed.
Good Luck
James

well, i just got back from a friends shop, and he agrees with me on the wrong/ defective vrv. also he looked under it and said it has a green module in it, and he feels it may be too high a vacuum need for what i can supply.
soo, tomorrow it off to the ford parts desk to look at some options.

well, i just got done with the dealers parts department, and the green trans module is a high altitude unit. they said i need the purple one, so i got it and will try it if it ever stops raining enough to let me get the truck into the garage without flooding everything.
