Basic electronic troubleshooting skills are to cut the problem in half immediately. Do you have a charging problem, or short???
Measure the battery with the engine off. It should be about 12.5vdc. Then start up the engine. Measuring the battery now with the engine running it should be 14.5vdc, because that means the alternator is charging. If not, then a charging problem.
Pull your neg battery cable. Put an ammeter(multimeter on amps) between the battery post and cable. With the key off and doors closed, there should be NO current draw. If there is, then a short.
as ,mil1on stated all the trouble shooting has been done. i have yet to try another new voltage regulater and this weekend when i get some time off i think im gonna test my ignition switch. that is the only thing i havent tested yet. illl let yall know what i find out if anything. thanks for the help and keep posting your findings.

just for the record had a 79 with the same simptoms after 2 alt starter volt reg ign switch two batts found the plug to the volt reg was vibrating loose and causing a drain on the system spread the terminals cleaned them and put on some dielectric grease and two years later still running strong though u might like to know

I just read about the use of dielectric grease and found that it's not a conductor but an insulator. It said to use WD40 on the actual connection and dielectric grease to help seal from water.
I don't know if its true or not, but if it is then dielectric grease would not be something you'd want to put on the connection points.
sorry about the confusion ,dielectric grease is to provide a moisture preventitive and stop corosion which was starting in my case ,i put it on all my electrical connections keeps them moisture free and good as new. just my two pennys.

I just bought a new set of spark plugs & a new wireset from AutoZone. The sockets of the wireset are pre-treated with dielecric grease. They also sell dielectric grease packets which instruct you to coat the spark plug insulator & tip with the grease. So much for dielectric grease being a insulator!!!
i tries the wd-40 thing on the connectors for my voltage regulater and still the same thing. i went to go pick up my new 76 that i got for 150 and wouldnt you know the battery dies on me AGAIN. hopefully i can get this figuered out this weekend.
