I just picked up a 04' Screw XLT. I noticed that there is a black box
with on push button on it that is mounted to the back of the rearview
mirror, that is the standard plain mirror. The box is about 3" by 3" and 3/4 thick, and has a wire harness attached to it from under the headlinner.
Any1 know if this is something that was added at the factory, or more likely a remote starter or something to that order... I'll try and take a pick on my next day off when its light out.
That little box houses the electronics for the compass. It is what is known as a "flux gate compass" that uses no moving parts in sensing magnetic north. The button is used during calibration of the compass - the process for that is in your owner's manual.
The manual states that I use the ODO button in the cluster to set the Zone and to CAL the compass. Nothing states to use the "Black Box" button, what then is that for i wonder.. I will try both and see.
Hold down the button on the rear view mirror box for like 3-5 seconds...then it triggers the compass calibration display on the odo screen, or in my case, the message center display.

Then dont you have to drive around in a circle 3 times to calibrate? or does the zoneing take care of that now.
Yep, the manual was wrong The button on the "black box" is to set the region/zone
and then holding in the ODO reset button on the cluster sets it to Calibration mode.
