Wow. i picked up the coolest truck ever Tuesday night. It's a 77 ford F?50 with 38.5 in tsl's, a 460, and.....the frame is 30 in. off the ground. ok, here's the Q: how can i find out if the truck is registered as a half ton or a three quarter ton? the badges are not on the truck anymore. the VIN starts out "f25"-does that mean 250? thanks, i'll have pictures up soon hopefully.
oh, another thing-I noticed the piece running down to the steering arm (I THINK) on the driver's side (it has four hoses going to it-power steering?) was leaking, so i went to tighten the hoses, and it is sloppy loose. not the hoses, the whole piece. is this normal? i noticed steering was off, but i've never driven a lifted truck, so it might be that.
one more thing-the access plate to the front of the tranny (c6 right?) is missing. it's about 2" by 5"-it's essential, but can i drive w/o it? how much trouble would that be?
The F25 means F250. If the steering box is loose it needs to be tight prior to drving it. I'd remove it and check the frame for cracks where it mounts while you're at it. Can't help with the tranny Q.
the part that's loose is about six inches long by 1-1/2-2 inches deep and tall, with a bar running down to the wheel area, where it takes a 90 degree bend towards the rear, and goes about 7 inches (maybe a little less). that horizontal piece has threads on it, but it's welded in place. are we talking about the same piece? thanks for the help.
Torque convertor inspection plate.Not necessary but should have one to keep road grime out.
F25 = F-250 2x4
Regarding the power steering: There is a couple of threads going on right now about this same problem of the distribution leaking.
Maybe scroll down for a look.

This sounds like a power assist steering system. Does it also have a cylinder in front of the front axle,called a power cylinder, with two hoses running from the piece with four hoses on it, which sounds alot like the draglink?
So, summing up, if it has two hoses from the power steering pump to the drag link and two hoses from the draglink to the power cylinder then it is a power assist system, and yes there is some play in the drag link. You can turn it back and forth a little due to the ball joints on each end.
2 inches sounds like alot. Is it a power assist system?? If so the pitman arm is on the steering box. The steering box is mounted on the frame, drivers side just rear of the radiator lower drivers corner. The steering box, on these systems, has a shaft which extends thru the frame and the pitman arm is on this shaft. It will be on the outside of the frame rail drivers side.
i'm pretty sure it's power assist, it felt like it. definentely not power, but not 100% manual. i'll have to take a look at it tomorrow, it's not parked very close to me. thanks dude.
No problem. That type of system isnt one of Mr Ford's better ideas IMHO. The vagueness, in my experience, is a trait of that system. Checkout this link if you ever decide to dump that old system.
I think that is correct. The power assist was on F250 4x4's pre 77 maybe 771/2 cant remember. I did the bad thing and assumed it was a 4x4 we were talking about :-X23 Although it still sounds like he is describing a power assist setup to me.

>I thought the junky power-assist system was only available
>on the pre 77 4x4s? The original poster's vechile is a 2x4.
