Yeah I'm glad I didn't leave mine on in the parking lot today. We went into school at 8 this morning, it was cold, around 40 and cloudy, but fine otherwise.
At 3:45 when school ended, it was 18 and ice was on EVERYTHING. I'm VERY glad I left my parking brake off. Then again I never engage it. But I had it on this morning when we were idling in the parking lot waiting for the door to the ROTC building to open and I was in neutral. Just glad I disengaged it when I killed the truck.

It's a 2000 Silverado with the 5.3L if that makes a difference. Auto.
RP,

There should be some sort of adjustment under the vehicle for the cable. Also, if the truck has a rear disc brakes, it will also may have a small set of brake shoes on the ID of the rear rotors (this is how my Explorer is set up). Those pads crap out sometimes.

I've not owned a GM product in a while so I'm not certain how they are doing things these days. You're a smart fellow though. Take off the rear wheels and have a look. However they did it, you'll figure it out. Worst case you lay out the $15.00 for the Chilton's manual in the name of doing a nice one for mom. they may have a copy of it at the local library as well - even better.

Ok will do. I'll look for the adjustment as soon as I finish dinner and the space heater out there gets it decently warm. It does have rear discs. What's the ID?
I don't remember if it gradually stopped working or just gave out. I'll have to ask her.

ID = Inside Diamter. Theyll be like little drum brak shoes locted on the backside of the rotor inside the hub where the wheel studs are located. Basically look on the backside of the discs where the wheel studs are installed from.

Ahh ok good to know.

Well...I'm going to get around to it asap. I have reviews starting tommorow and exams all next week, but I have Friday off. She doesn't though. I'll probably get around to it next weekend, eh. School sucks. I will however check for an adjustment thing tonight. Any idea where it might be or what it might look like?

Should be a cable running down a frame rail or down the middle of the frame. Adjustment somewhere around a cross member. Agian, you're a pretty bright fellow. Have someone get inside and operate the cable while you freeze your fanny off underneath there looking to see what moves. Once you identify what's moving follow-it until you find an adjustment device of some sort on the cable. Then you'll be in business. Wish I were a little closer to help you out with it.

Thanks for the tips guys. I was afraid it was something worse. We had rain all day yesterday and temperature in the low teens overnight. Now to find a hair dryer...

I seriously think there is a design flaw with this parking brake system-so many people having trouble with it-and not just because of weather, as this has beeen discussed many times on this forum. I finnally gave up on this problem some time ago-I just don't use my e-brake, after replacing every part of this system-not worth the aggravation....
