I just bought an '86 F350. It had a steady fuel leak and took a good minute of cranking to start after a couple days sitting, otherwise ran as well as I expected for a 3rd owner.
Today I traced the fuel leak to the valve covers, tightened the loose fasteners carefully and wiped clean the engine side of the air cleaner.
Now it wont start and I notice that the glow plug light on the dash is not lighting either. their is a two prong sensor in the intake manifold at the #1 cyl that was disconnected and have no way to tell which side gets the red or the white (yellow?) wire. It had obviously not been connected for a long time and tried it either way and then off. Did I most likely fry something?
Iwould greatly appreciate any pointers.
Two prong makes no nevermind which way connector installed.......that is the engine temp switch.
The Engine Temperature Switch provides voltage to the Cold Timing Advance Solenoid and the Cold Idle Solenoid. When the engine temperature is below 112 °F (44 °C), the Engine Temperature Switch is closed. When the Ignition Switch is turned to START or RUN, the solenoids are energized, advancing injection pump timing and engine idle, allowing the engine to run more smoothly when cold. When the engine temperature reaches 112 °F (44 °C), the Engine Temperature Switch opens. This denergizes the solenoids, returning the timing and idle to normal.
To start turn key on press fuel pedal to the floor, then if above 30*F hold at 1/2 throttle, if below 30*F hold at 3/4-full throttle start engine. Once started release the fuel pedal to the fast idle setting or feather pedal to keep running.
The fuel leak is probably coming from the plastic caps on top of each injector. Beneath the cap is 2 rubber o rings that become hardened and cause the leak. To fix, purchase a return fuel repair kit from international dealer or injection shop. Replace the o rings, hoses between each injector and the plastic caps. The reason for the wait to start light to operate is not known unless the engine was up to temp. The fuel leak will cause the engine to be hard starting after sitting. The fuel system looses its prime. DONT CRANK ON THE STARTER TOO LONG - very sensitive to overheating ... 20 seconds cranking 2 minute cool down time. If you use a battery booster, use only the passenger battery. Hope this helps you out.
Thanks guys I will repost after I do the O rings, #4 did have a small puddle. I will be nicer to my starter now too. I lost a very clean '72 F250 360cid/gas entire engine loom to a bad starter solenoid--but that got me to my diesel...
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!!
