2002 4wd problem

My explorer has 65,000 mi and it seems to be going into hi 4wd by itself. I hear it clunking and the 4wd light blinks for 20-30 seconds once in a while.

Is this a common problem?

Check your tire wear and tire pressures. An imbalance is the effective circumferance will cause the speed sensors to think the rear tires are slipping.

My 4WD light never comes on when it goes into 4WD automatically. A blinking light means a fault. Sounds like a bad velocity sensor.

I've currently have a 2002 XLT and previously had a 2003 XLS, neither gave any indication of 4WD in auto mode other than hearing the front shaft spinning.
