I doubt Ford put that together (there's nothing anywhere in our order guide about it), and no police department would buy it for one simple reason: with that big console and floor shift in EVERY Five-Hundred, where would you put all the radios and computers?
Too bad there isn't a four cylinder option. Do these meter maids really need cars at all?
Out here in AZ they just tape cameras to light poles and send you tickets in the mail.
Finally, a cop car that gives the guys with a 3-on-the-tree six a fighting chance
Looks too small for day to day use. Looks OK for desk pukes and detectives.
Sorry Ringo with Re: to your quote, the 1983 Dodge Diplomat (slant six version) took THAT distinction. When I was on the job ( back in the Stone Age) our Butt kissing/"look how much money I saved the town" Police Director actually purchased TEN of them for the Patrol Division. For the non-police members here...that's the officers that respond to your house and do the REAL street work. Those cars, after six months would NOT go over 60 MPH! Put four of us lard @$$ cops in one and you would be lucky to reach highway speed.
To the slants six's credit...we attempted to burn them up by driving in "D2" ALL THE TIME but those motors AND trannys never gave out. Thank the Lord he came to his senses the next year and we got full size vehicles.
Looks like a good vehicle for police work in the snowbelt....4WD and 4 doors..would probably get good gas mileage and go places a crown vic couldnt...the ONLY unhappy people would be some of the "pedal to the metal" cops who drive them ...like they were fighter planes.....with the heavy duplication of services and universal back-up to the back-up we see today....there is one in a thousand cases were a crown vic driving cop would see ANY improvement in response speed...PERHAPS ....the crown vic would do better in running a felon off the road though...in day to day use however...a 500 with out the center console and floor shift probably WOULD be a good cop car.
They're good cars for patrols, mainly because they get better fuel economy, and will save more in the long run because of that. I think the 500 gets a good 8mpg more than the crown vic, of course, having a smaller V6 instead of a 4.6Lv8 high performance engine DOES help alot. One town is even using the new Mustangs as police cars.
That car looks like a wreck victim with replacement body panels that wasnt painted yet with a big stupid looking ricer wing with lights on it on the top.
