4x4 Problem on 98 Explorer

I've got a question for anyone out there that may be able to help. I have a 1998 Explorer Eddie Bauer, 4.0 SOHC 4wd. Recently the 4wd lights were flashing on the dash and I figured it to be the transfer case motor. I just put in a new TC motor and now whenever I put the truck in reverse, it makes a loud high pitched grinding sound and doesn't go into gear. It drives fine in DRIVE, but not reverse. The other thing I noticed is now when I swich from 4H to 4L, it shifts in hard (while in neutral and stopped). It never did this before. Any suggestions? Did the new transfer case motor have to be aligned before I put it on? Thanks.

only thing I can think of is maybe the switch on the transfer case was in the wrong place when you changed over the motor. have only changed one once and after the fact I learned more about the pin comming out of the transfer case is infact an arrow pointing to what position the case is in. and thus that lines up the shift motor too.

I know very little about this area because I have not had not had a automatic transfer case, only manual shifting ones. but...
