I just bought a 1996 f350 crew 4x4 pick up. it came with a k&n filter and cat back system. the problem im having is in the morning i start it and it smokes like a son of a gun. so i changed the gps and still it does it and while im driving a slight white smoke is happening. i need some help the truck has 200k on it but its a beauty. bought from tx
if it is doing it only til op temp comes up, ;there is a glow plug problem not heating a cylinder. if it continues , i would venture to say there is an injector dumping too much fuel. also check for coolant loss, and smell the exhaust.
Often, the K&N isn't the best choice for the Powerstroke, as others have seen dust within the intake (after) the filter, thus many go with either a TYMAR air intake system, or AFE by what I've seen.
I have the TYMAR that Dale Isley sells at www.tymarperformance.com which probably thousands of Powerstroke users have, especially on the OBS (old body style) trucks, but many Superduties now have them as well, as they aren't as pricey as the AFE.
Instead of starting your truck once the "wait to start" light goes out...wait a little longer (perhaps 15 seconds or so) and try it then, and see if there is any difference. You might have a glow plug or two which needs more time to heat up enough to fully ignite the fuel in that particular cylinder.
perhaps there is a broken wire in the valve cover gasket to the glow plugs and not heating the glow plugs OR you arent waiting for the plugs to heat to proper temp. thats my other nickel worth.
i replaced the gp and gpr, still smokes white on start up when cold but after warmed up not as bad but still there
Any diesel fuel in the coolant tank? Could be injector cups or a head gasket issue. If not it's sounding like it could be a bad injector or injector o-ring.
thats another thing i just put a full 4 inch exhaust system and a k&n cold air system with a hyper tech tuner and not impressed at all and no black smoke? what happen
