My dashboard on my 95 F150 is really squeaking from what sounds like syrofoam rubbing together. I partially disassembled the dash and found that the right (main) dash mount broke where the dash mounts to the body (to the bottom right of the glove box.)
The plastic mount broke some time ago, and I glued it up using some heavy duty adhesive, however, this didn't last. I have 2 options that I see - screw a makeshift mount into the dash or glue a mount to the dash. Screwing a mount in may go into the vent and I will only have plastic to hold it together. I don't see how I can use bolts to hold it on. Gluing it down 1) doesn't always last and 2) it's 30-40 degrees out now, so it will be difficult to get a long drying glue to apply.
Any suggestions? This is the major mount on the passenger side and it really causes the dash to move around a lot.
I had the same problem with my 1995 i used a stereo strap (metal strip with holes) and rigged up a fix. This was caused by people using the dashboard to pull themselves up into the truck.
I got a piece of L channel aluminum about 6", two 1/4" x 2.5" SS hex bolts ans two SS stop nuts. It took the better part of the afternoon, a little fineggeling, a fair amount of cursing, and it is better than new. I used the original dash mount on the A pillar and drilled two holes just above the heater core. There is just enough space to get a thin-walled socket around a stop nut in the wire chase. MAKE SURE THAT YOU MOVE THE WIRE CHASE BEFORE YOU DRILL. There is a slight bend to the dash at that area, just make a relief cut along the spine of the channel, and it will bend to fit perfectly! Costs about $6.
Thanks for the help, sounds like a good thanksgiving weekend project.
By the way, my truck won't start now. I loosened up the dash bolts, then bolted it back together. It cranked slow last night, so I charged up the battery. This morning I went out, and strong crank, but no start. I hitched a ride with the wife at o'dark thirty this morning so I didn't really look at anything other than to check to make sure the coil and spark plugh wires are in place.
Since all I did yesterday was the dash, change the serpenine belt, and fill up the tranny fluid, I'm puzzelled as to why it won't start. Is there anything that you can think of that I may have screwed up when I bolted the dash back in? I only removed the screws just under the windsheild and on the very bottom. Is this related or just a fluke?
