carbon buildup removal

i have installed a new 302 crate engine and have been playing a game of hit and miss with setting my timing and air fuel mixture. in the process of this is is possible to buildup carbon on the heads as a result of running the engine way to to rich. i have really blackened up a couple sets of new plugs in this process. this is the first time i have ever tried doing all this so i am usually always doing the old live and learn thing. i had it running pretty good a couple of times but when i do a little tweaking here and there it just throws things out of whack again. do i set the timing by taking plug out of number one cylinder and hold finger over it. then turn engine over a few times till air blows out number 1. then line up number 1 on cap with where rotor points at. i bought my distributor with a timing advance already set they said so i dont have to do anything else as far as that goes right. thanks for any help!

With a new engine, it'll take a LONG time running rich to build up enough carbon to affect anything. Run a few bottles of Chevron's Techron additive to remove what's there and periodically run their gas to maintain it.

That will get the dist in the ballpark if you took it out. If it will start, then set the timing with a timing light. Once you get a baseline set, you can then arbitrarily advance the timing a little bit, then go for a test drive and listen for pinging on hills. Keep doing this till you hear pinging, and then back off a little bit. This will be the best timing setting for the set-up you are running at that time.
