Remote Start?
Just purchased the viper 791xv security w/remote start and was hoping for some input on some questions I have. The pulse timer is set for around 13-15 seconds which seems to be enough time for the glow plugs to heat up even in cold weather. The issue I'm seeing is that as soon as the remote start activates, the glow plug light comes on for maybe a second and then goes off. The pulse timer then waits it's 13-15 seconds and turns the truck over. This is totally different from if I put the key in the ignition, turn it over to get the glow plugs warmed up and then start the truck. The glow plug light in this instance remains lit for 5-7 seconds. My question would be, that if the remote start isn't keeping the glow plug light on, does this mean the glow plugs aren't warming up, or is this how these remote starts work? Alot of rambling

hey deckguy, i just bought the 791XV for my truck tonight, i should be installing it when i get it. how do you like it? PM me...
yes, like blood said, the glow plugs stay on for two minutes after the truck starts. does it seem like the glow plugs have done their job when you go to start it? (does it start easily like before).... or, does it start hard, like cranking it without allowing the glow plugs to cycle?

Seems to start fine. May need to set the crank time to 1.6 seconds but for now I'm keeping it @what the tech set it @. I just don't like the fact that the glow plug light comes on and then quickly goes off before the truck starts. As I said when I use the key, the light stays lit anywhere from 5-7 seconds and then goes off but it doesn't do this with the remote start. Tech that installed it said the plugs are heating up but we'll see what he says when I show him the bill for new set off glow plugs. Maybe I'm just freakin out though and he knows what he's talking about.

I've had the 791xv in my truck for about a year now. The glow plug light usually comes on and stays on for 1-10 seconds depending on the outside temperature and whether or not the truck has been driven. The installer I had do the job screwed it up pretty bad and I ended up having to rewire most of the system. When I ran into a couple of problems, and if you try to wire it in just using the installation instructions that come with it you will most definately have problems, I got a lot of help over at the 12volt.com website. Many of the problems posted deal with the 791xv (mostly installation related). I suspect because it's one of, if not, the most popular RS/Security system. These guy's can also get you the DEI install sheets that are specifically for your truck, in case you want to go over the wiring yourself.

I have had the same alarm in my 03 and now in my 05, and it should work the same as if your using the key. The light should stay on until glow plugs are ready, and not shut off immediately. It is possible that you don't have all the ignition wires hooked up, I believe there is a 2nd and 3rd ignition wire that needs to be connected. I had to up the cranking time to 1.6, before it would not crank 100% of the time, after changing the cranking time it cranks 100%.

I had a shop do the original install, but when I got it back all the wiring looked like a rat's nest, they had actually used T-taps in some places, and the brain was just stuffed-up under the dash. So I ended up ripping the alarm back out and reinstalling it with some guidance from the guy's over at 12volt. Since I had spent a couple of years installing alarms back in the early '90's I had some idea of what was going on. But if it weren't for those tech sheets, it would have been a lot harder. I'd be more than happy to help in any way I can, just PM me with any questions. Oh, and what he was reffering to in not using the pulse timer relay, a few installers are hooking into the Glow Plug Control Module mounted to the engine on the 6.0's. They're using the control wire that comes from the PCM and activates the GPCM. I don't know if it would be present on a 7.3. I'm not so sure it's a good idea on the 6.0's as the control wire may not be hot for the same period that the wait to start light is on. On the other hand, the experts here might be able to tell us if it will work.

thanks for offering the help. i am NOT an electrician or i do not know how security systems work,etc. i do know how to splice wires, but other than that, i am taking a shot in the dark. so i need all the help i can get, as to what goes where. those links he posted for me looked to be in greek. but im sure that when i get the alarm and can see the wiring, it will all make sense to me. i am a quick learner.
