Remote start for the '05
Apparently the signals are now digital, like the glow plug sensor, etc. I had a DEI on my '97 and it worked great so I put a Dei on this truck and they said since the glow plug sensor now sent a digital signal that they couldn't use the glow plug sensor and had to go to a glow plug timer. It also seems to have a hard time figuring out when the truck is actually started. The starter spins for a second or two and then it stops before the truck actually starts.
same issue with the "Wait To Start". Installed the pulse timer
set at 45 seconds. Works just fine. did have to increase the
crank time though - this truck doesn't start as consistantly as my '96 7.3 psd.
Get yourself the "Bitwriter" programmer, and you can
play with all these parameters. Cranktime, Tach Sense, Volt Sense, etc.
it's about 100$ online.
Its my understanding that there are 3 ways to do autostart.
1) Timed. Crank for some time seconds. Can be programmed to one of several values.
2) RPM. When the RPM is at a certain level.
3) Voltage. When the voltage level reaches a certain peak.
My guess is that a lot of places may not even tap into the RPM or Voltage stuff and just give you a timed start. Which may change in the winter when you need it most.
The bitwriter, may be a good idea. I know you can program these things using the valet switch. They did not give me the programming guide. But I found one on line.
Glafond, how does the bitwriter connect? Do you have have tot have access to the "brain" of the thing?
programmers. They come with the cable to connect directly to the
comm port on the remote start/alarm unit.
For another 10 bucks you can get an extension cable to permanently mount the comm port like the diagnostics port for the tuners.

So this is just an easier way to adjust then using the valet switch ?
It kinda sucks, my '97 started EVERY time ...
I wonder what the voltage adjustment is reading...

*glow plugs: on a 30 sec. timer after i activate the system.
*crank time: i changed in to six sec. of crank time, but when it starts before the six sec. it sends the rpm signal back to system to stop cranking.
its also good because it has the turbo timer that i set for 5 min so i could allow cool down after those extended trips. the system is warrantied for 3 yrs. or 36,000 miles. i believe total cost was $400.00 with installation and diesel "wait to start" timer. hope this helps.

firesoutmatt- All 6.0's use those sensors for the glow plugs. If your installer really did use that system instead of the timer for wait-to-start he probably tied into the GPCM. There is a green/white wire in the green plug that is the control signal from the PCM to the GPCM telling it to activate. If he did it a different way I'd be curious to know what wire he was able to use.
One thing I don't like is that with the Headlights in Auto, the Lights come on
while the truck is idling. My neighbors aren't going to like that. Has anybody disabled the autolamp feature with the parking brake engaged?
I have a Crimestopper RS-900 two-way system installed in my '04 PSD. I used 10 second fixed delay after spending hours researching the glowplug/wait to start issue. (Even at temps below 0 I never saw the wait to start light on for more than about 8 seconds.) I decided under the circumstances, that there was no practical way to use the wait to start circuit. Keep in mind that the glow plugs can remain "on" for some time after the wait to start light has gone out, and even after the engine has started, according to the 6.0 bible.
The Crimestopper has a "tach programming" mode which allows it to search for and self adjust to the vehicle tach signals. Until I figured out how to do that procedure, I had erratic success with the remote starts. After doing the tach programming, it has worked flawlessly cranking the starter for as long as needed to start.
The Turbo timer is selectable in 1 minute increments up to 5 minutes when you turn the key off, and you can also use the "quick stop" feature which will let it run up to 24 minutes, like when you stop for a cup of coffee....
fireoutmatt, I would also be interested to hear what your installer did to use the wait to start feature.
If the Ford Silver/Gold has figured it out without having to go through all this, it may be the way to go.
