any suggestion? my sons rotty eats rocks sometimes and I'm worried its going to need surgery one day to remove them. any cure for this. you know when he's ate some rocks, he won't eat food or drink any water till he pass the rocks, he looks to be in a lot of discomfort. anyone else have a dog that does this?
When my lab was a pup, he used to pick up rocks and try to eat them. I had a dog book at the time, and I ran across some information in there that it is often a sign of a mineral deficiency. I switched his diet to a better brand of dog food and he has never done it since. However, I have also been told that it can be a sign of boredom or from a lack of attention, as in you the owner are away from him for long periods of time. Whatever it is, it isn't healthy and can cause some serious damage if he doesn't stop doing it....which I'm sure you are aware of anyway.
it is almost always form the wrong pet food. some animals need more minerals than the pet foods have. it can turn into a dangerous condition when the objects abck up in the intestine and bacteria forms. check the crud protein and mineral content on the bag. something like pedigree is very high in both.
The biggest thing when choosing a dog food is to look on the ingredients list. The items that make up the dog food are listed from the greatest abundance to the least in abundance. So if you look for a dog food that lists corn first on its list, well your dog is eating more corn than what is second or third on the list. Look for a good dog food and see what the first few items are on the list. I good lamb and rice dog food should list lamb first on its list. Corn might come in third or fourth.
My brothers dog (cocker spaniel) eats anything. Even cords pluged into the wall.... His theory is...let the dog learn its lesson. If it hurts enough..they should stop doing it.
I'd call the vet. Tell them what food you're feeding it, and they will give you a list of suggestions. I can tell you now that most cheap ('ol roy from wally world, and dad's) are on a DO NOT FEED TO YOUR DOG list our 4H put together some years ago. There is too much crude fat, and not enough nutrition in it. We use pedigree.
we get the dog food from the vets, its good dog food, I kind of think he's playing with the rocks then swallows them. the rotty seen our dashound run around the yard with rock maybe he's trying to copy her
I strongly think that your dog is bored ! and yes he'll try to copy the dashound since he doesn't have anything else to do ! here's what you can do, 1. put more atention to your dog, rottweilers are very energetic dogs. 2. you can get a bottle of repellent and spray around the rocks, that will do it for a while!
