Happily, both boys (Jeff 24, Erik aka Rhino Boy 18) are into cars. The whole family has spent lots of time autocrossing, road racing, ice racing etc. The 48 f-1 is the project for RB and me. Buying the f-1 is what really brought out his interest in cars and trucks, so much so that he decided to go to school for auto collision repair. He's teaching me now, what a switch. In Feb Jeff will be a father for the first time, Scott Patrick is his name, and we'll use a bench seat in the truck with a center seat belt for a car seat. Haven't figured out how to do that for the Miata yet....
My dad was a car guy on a budget. He had a 46 mercury convertible that was a mild custom. His main problem with it was a nagging wife and kids to feed and no money.
My brother and I both are car guys, heck even my little sister knows here way around under the hood but I am the one with the disease. When other kids were trading cards of their favorite sports stars I had a stack of trading cards covered with top fuel dragsters, funny cars, and the latest customs of the day (can you even get street rod trading cards anymore??)
My boys are pretty interested, my older boy not as much as my yougest. The 15 yr old wants to be into it he just doesn't want to do any work (typical teen). My 11 year old has laid claim to my old 59 Dodge truck and helps me out with my 49 on a regular basis.
In my life, when things have broke, I've fixed them (or broke them so bad in the attempt that you had to replace it) I've never had the money to have someone else do the work (house, cars, electronics, appliances, etc) My attitude is "what have you got to loose?" might as well tear into it and see what makes it tick.
Thats great about your boys!! Keep them involved, there could be alot worse thing for them to get interested in than cars.
