Bad influence? NO..... We need more of this younger generation getting into these old american cars and trucks. I'm 15 years old and am 1 of 2 kids in my high school of 300 that is interested in these vehicles. I'm one that isn't afraid to get dirty and will work on my own truck and others. I get tired of hearing all these ricers driving around and my classmates telling me to get somethine new and them talking about how cool ricers are. I love the sound of an American made V-8. I find it funny walking in school after i changed my point gap on my y-block and people smirking about the grease on my arms....i just responded by havne't ya had to work on something. All i'm saying is we need more people going into these old vehicles like i am. Most of this new generation seems to be a bunch of sissys in my opinion and we need more of em to be like me and my friends.
Yeah, well, more power to you. Don't let the smirks get to you. You've got the answers; they don't even realize there's a question!
Great stories, like em all. My 2 sons are not into this scene but are doing good at their own thing. The oldest one bought a loaded black F350 XLT Powerstroke Crewcab dually for his work truck and the other one gets a company brand X for his work truck.

Man ... I wish I had friends who had an old-truck hobby like mine. I have the oldest student-owned vehicle on a college campus of 20,000 students.
Oh, you know it .... I just wish I had the horsepower to give them a whuppin'. It has the stock six with a glasspack muffler and short tailpipe, so at least it sounds good. =)
My friend, Kendal, has the oldest Chevy at school, a 1955 3600, he has a straight 6 with a exhaust cut out and glasspack muffler if he decides to use it. I have the oldest Ford at school, my 1957 f-250. I have a Thrush glasspack on it with the 292 y-block and the y-block had enough will to hold out and beat Kendal and a few ricers in this town before it's compression declined dramatically. I will soon be swapping in a 302 with a 600 CFM Holley with a hotter cam, looking at a Lunati or an Edelbrock, along with a 4 speed tranny. It will have true dual exhaust and dual Thrush glasspacks. I'm hopping i get this in there by the end of this school year. Not driving it anymore to save the y-block in case someone wants parts from it or the whole y-block and t-98 tranny. I showed the people in this town that a stock 57 F-250 could spin out and beat all their souped up ricers, but what they dunno is that it's going to be a lil better with a strong 302 in there compared toe the dying y-block. Many people in this town think i'm crazy and should buy a new car but i'm not going to because i love my 57 too much. I can't wait till i have the 302 in it cause then i'll be once again driving it. Kinda funny seeing how this generation reacts to a old truck with loud exhausts.....the y-block sure did do a good job at getting that thrush glasspack to sound sweet and to get those kids to cover their ears...lol.. My brother finally realized i was old school and i think this town if finally realizing that i'm just one of their 2 nuisances, me and Kendal are always disturbin the peace..lol, Thanks for the support and i hope to see more young people get into this hobby. I plan on going to the McPherson Auto Restoartion college, my boss Gary Martin was a teacher there in the interior department. I work at Gary Martin's shop, Goldfield Trim & Upholstery, right now we're working on a 1950 Ford Sedan. I am hooked and will be hooked till the day i die.
In our family, "old" cars were the only cars we had. My father never bought a car he couldn't pay cash for while I lived at home, and most were in pretty sad shape when we got them. I would help repair them starting as young as I can remember, and took over the task by the time I was 14 rebuilding the mechanicals and repairing the bodies.
I guess tools were in our genes (and jeans most of the time ) as all three boys were and still are gearheads, we all race and both my younger brothers jobs are mechanical in nature. I really enjoy working on Gracie, I'm at peace with the world then.

I had thought about going. My buddy went up their and toured and was going to go, but he couldn't afford too. Seems like a great school though.
I aslo had the oldest Ford at school and the oldest vehicle. My buddy that was going to go to McPherson had the second oldest, but it was 1955 Chevy Bel-Air. I aslo had the fastest truck and believe it was faster than all the cars too. There needs to be more young people involved in older cars and trucks.

It's never too late, You need experience to work on trucks, cars, whatever. You get experience by working on them - so get started. And bring your questions here ....
Interesting topic to come up... I just spent the weekend back at my mother's 80th birthday party, saw my nephews. My three sons all wrench on their own wheels (a V8 Maverick, a TBird SC, and a Mustang GT) and help out on my '52. My nephews' father doesn't know a wrench from a screwdriver (a finance guy) and all the nephews do is play whatever sports Dad signs them up for, or watch sports on TV. Not the worst things they could be doing, but it's all they do. Neither knows the first thing about using tools, pounding a nail, fixing a toaster, or what is under the hood of a car. Anything goes wrong around the house, they call someone and shuck out the big bucks.
So more power to any of these kids that don't mind getting their hands dirty and breaking away from their electronics for a while!
i dont think its a bad Influence. it all started for me when my dad bought a 71 Sno Jet Super Jet 396, so i started collecting old snowmobiles i would see them sitting be hind house with old trucks. i would say fixing the old snowmoblie motors kind of helped me with the biger engine, like if it dose spark check the points and all that bs. then when i got a little older i wanted to fix my dads 50 ford. then i bought my own truck a 71 f 250, then earlyer this mouth i had some guy give me a 64 f 100. the body has barly any rust. my dad got pissed when i pulled it home a parked it next to 73 rupp yankee. then my moms say the yard looks like a junk yard and hates to see what my yard will look like. i would say the only bad influence in some peoples eyes is the copenagen and and miller high life buts who cares its all good. that probly why my grades in shcool is not to good, but at least i can fix a truck or old snowmobile.
