transmission question

1970 F 250 sport custom
360 motor
C6 automatic transmission

I have been noticing that lately my truck is taking longer to shift through the gears, and shifting at higher RPM's. I am going to service my tranny, any suggestions? Thanks

Service the trans first. See if that changes anything.

You can do a complete fluid flush. I have the same trans and did it. What you do is first pull the pan and replace the filter and put pan back on with new gasket (this is the messy part). Then find the trans return cooler line. Of the two it's the one higher up on the trans. It's just on the passenger side of the trans where the hump is in the cab. Remove it and clamp on some of clear tubing. I have about an 8-10 ft piece that I use for all my vehicles and a small hose clamp. Run the other end of the hose into a 5 gallon bucket. Have a case of fluid with you, I think it's type F. I think the capacity is more like 14 qts so if I'm right I think I had about 16-18 quarts. Start the truck and watch the old fluid pump right out of the trans. When it starts to pump air bubbles pour in a couple more quarts. Keep doing this until the fluid starts to come out looking like the new stuff. Then just turn off the truck, remove the clear hose and re-attach the return cooling line. Run the truck and shift through all the gears and make sure you have the proper volume of trans fluid.

(12 qts. usually the max on a C6).
Usually if the modulator is shot, you will never get 3rd gear. (or have to lift).
Service trans. (Usually not the problem because Ford uses screens as opposed to paper filters).
Pull the vac line and look for fluid seepage out the mod valve, if seeping, replace mod valve. If none, there is an adjustment screw inside the mod valve, in for longer shift pattern, out for shorter pattern. Screwing in the screw on the vacuum modulator valve moves the rod in that increases the throttle valve pressure of the trans.

I heard from a mechanic that the newer transmission fluids have detergents in them that will hurt an old tranny like mine. He suggested saving all of the old fluid and filtering it through a paint filter and then replacing. He said that the detergents in the fluid will degrate some stuff and eventually burn out the transmission. Any truth to that?

Using old, burnt fluid could eventually burn up the tranny. I wouldn't do it.

All trans fluid is high in detergent, even "F".

You may want to run an external filter as well. I had one on my 84, very easy to make, I just used a remote filter mount from Napa, a standard Ford filter, mounted it on the fenderwell and ran rubber lines from the tranny cooler line, to the filter, then to the cooler. It did catch a lot of stuff that would have otherwise floated around and damaged the tranny.
An easy way to get most of the fluid out is to pull the small dustcover plate off the bellhousing, turn the engine over by hand until the drain plug is visible, and pull that. You'll get about 6-8qts from there.

Well, I just fininshed my first trans serv. It was a blast. The transmission was really clean on the inside underneath the filter. No shavings or chunks in the pan, and the cork gasket came off and I replaced it with the rubber one that came with the kit. All of the bolts around the pan were not even tight, I could back them out without a wrench. pretty freaky

Used to have trouble with the gasket sealing on the pan.Directions said to apply thin coat of grease on gasket.Everyone I talked said thin bead of silicone,I used the silicone.Leaked everytime. The last time I did it ,gave the grease a shot and it sealed first try.Just like everything else I learn the hard way. moparnut

I didnt use grease, I initially i was having problems with the gasket staying on the pan, so i put bolts up through the pan and into the gasket so it would stay put, worked like a champ.

NEVER use silicone.
Use the cork gasket. Gaskacinch it to the pan and dry to the case.
Works every time.

Hey Cross, I see you did the service. Did you just do a basic service or a complete flush? And that comment about detergents doing damage, I heard the same thing a couple years back when I was having trans problems from a junkyard guy. My mechanic says he's an idiot. I also use the Carguys (Click and Clack) for advice. I've done a thorough search and this is the best I could find from them:

http://www.cartalk.com/content/colum...August/10.html

I also used grease cause that's what the instructions said to do when I bought my kit. The pan bolts always seem to come loose so make sure you check them every now and then. Especially within a couple weeks of your new service.
