Here is my add to this one. Plan ahead and pull that gasket out ahead of time and let lay out, or under a large, book? Or if you hit a trans shop for it, they have better (thicker) gaskets and aren't all balled up. I use a little contact cement outboard of the bolt holes. I use that on one side of most gaskets that need to be held in place.
Any goop gets inside trans and nobody's happy.
Keep your mating surfaces dry to keep gasket from skwinching out.
Now, Ford torque converters that we are running have drain plugs in them. Pull the plate off the bell housing, roll the engine over untill you find an 1/8 pipe plug. Pull that and the pan and you have the trans drained.
