While we are on the topic, I too would like to get self test codes from my 95 f150 5L manual trans. However the self test IN plug has two pins and two wires, red/pink and green/blk. Which terminal do I ground to run the self test without frying the computer? All of the directions I can find show only one terminal and one wire.
I just took a 5-6 ft piece of wire and put a spade on one end and an alligator clip on the other. I stick the space into the "self test input" connector and ground the alligator clip anywhere.
The fordfuelinjection.com instructions for counting blinks tells you there will be a pause between numbers. All you do is count the blinks until there is a pause and write that number down. It is a digit in your 2 or 3 digit code. When there is a somewhat longer pause, that signals the end of your code and onto the next one.
What I did was count blinks and wait for pauses and write down numbers. Then turn the key off then on again and try to figure out where the codes start and end by figuring out where the longer pauses are. I think it took me 3-4 times to feel like I had the real codes.
You really don't need anything longer than a paperclip. You can ground the STI (the single wire) to anything to make it blink out the codes, but the STO wire is only a couple of inches away. Check out those links, both have a good diagram of which pins to jump.
OK, so is that first picture a correct one to go buy when doing this, or not.
Cause I think I know how to do it kinda sorta now, just need practice on it.
OK, i Just pulled my codes, and at the beggining i got like 7 single blinks seperated with pauses and after that it was 3 blinks pause 2blinks pause and then 7 blinks and it did it over again 3-2-7 Is the code 327 cause this is what it means
327 "DPFE or EVP circuit below minimum voltage of 0.2 volts"
It does repeat itself and I can't remember how many times. There's also something like 3 different sets of codes that are put out and I also can't remember what the difference in them are. But anyway, it looks like you're onto it. But wouldn't your code be 732 instead of 327 since your first set of blinks was 7?
here's the instructions again from fordfuelinjection.com. Note how the length of the pauses determines your digits versus codes:
The first blinks it gave were= 1- pause -1- pause -1- pause -1- pause ....and so forth for about seven times. Then I got the 3-pause -2- pause and 7-pause
It repeated it twice then it stopped. I did the whole thing 3 times and i got the same thing, 3 times. What were the beging blinks meaning or saying?
The computer outputs two sets of codes in the engine off test. First set are any current codes, i.e. what the computer sees wrong at that instant. It goes through the codes twice. Then there is a 3 second pause, a single flash, another three second pause, then it goes into flashing the memory codes, flashing them twice as well.
All of those 1's were probably some combination of 11 and 111 which mean system pass so there's nothing wrong in the KOEO mode. The 327 is then your CM (Continuous Memory) code for an EVP. Turns out this is exactly what I had wrong with my truck. I was getting the 1's and the 327 and another that pointed to the same thing. I tested my EVP and vacuum source with a vacuum pump ($25 at AZ). Both items were working like they should have been. I had the correct amount of vacuum and the EVP also reacted to vacuum correctly. I tried to take it off and couldn't so I changed something. Turns out the truck needed a tune up. The spark plugs were toast as well as the distributor cap and the wire from the coil to the cap. I tuned it all up (plugs, cap, rotor, wires, filters) and code 327 went away. Here you can read all about it:
In this condition if it's not your tune up parts, the mechanic I use will take off the EGR and clean it. It can get all gunked up and some carb cleaner will take that right off. Or you can buy a new one.
