I have an '01 Ford Escape with a factory-installed sun/moonroof. Recently, when I was opening it, I heard this awful grinding noise as the glass would stop moving. It's like it jumped it's track or something. I can hear the motor run but it does not wants to move well at all - it still stops and starts. I can't see anything blocking the path of the glass.
Needless to say, I'm not using it now but would like to when next spring rolls around.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
It's got plastic gears and Ford considers the roof non-repairable. It's been used in Cougars and other Fords too. Inalfa Roof Systems in the Netherlands makes the roof so no luck in getting parts from the manufacturer. The roofs have more faults than they should and the dealership will charge anywhere from $1,400-$1,900 to replace.
This leaves two choices - find an Escape in a wrecking yard and strip the roof for parts or find a "decent" shop that installs a roof similar to the Webasto brand. I priced a nice inside slider (similar to OEM) at $1,000 installed.
