2000 ranger question

i cannot seem to get my truck out of park sometimes, if i play with it sooner or later it will come out. I have tried switching the pedel position switch and nothing. any ideas?

Did you ever do anything to the shifter or the tranny? Anything major that might have knocked it out of alignment or whatever?
Floor or column shift?

Hmm...might post this in the tranny section, they are more knowledgeble than I am about it. I don't get the whole automatic tranny thing, I believe there is a cable that runs from the shifter to the transmission, I would assume that would have something to do with the problem. Sorry I can't be of more help.

PINPOINT TEST A: SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM DOES NOT RELEASE/LOCK PROPERLY
CONDITIONS DETAILS/RESULTS/ACTIONS
A1 TEST THE BRAKE LIGHTS

Apply the brake pedal and view the brake lights.


Do the brake lights illuminate?
Yes
GO to A7 .

No
GO to A2 .
A2 TEST FUSE 16 (15A)




Fuse 16 (15A)



Is the resistance of Fuse 16 ohms or less?
Yes
GO to A4 .

No
GO to A3 .
A3 TEST CIRCUIT 10 (LG/R) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND




Brake ON/OFF Switch C210


Measure the resistance of Circuit 10 (LG/R) at C210.


Is the resistance 10K ohms or less?
Yes
REPAIR Circuit 10 (LG/R) for a short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
GO to A4 .
A4 TEST CIRCUIT 10 (LG/R) FOR AN OPEN

Measure the resistance between the output side of Fuse 13 (15A) and the brake ON/OFF switch Connector C210, Circuit 10 (LG/R).


Is resistance 5 ohms or less?
Yes
GO to A5 .

No
REPAIR Circuit 10 (LG/R) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
A5 TEST THE BRAKE PEDAL POSITION SWITCH

Measure the resistance of the brake pedal position switch while open (OFF) and closed (ON).


Is the resistance of the switch greater than 10K ohms while OFF and 5 ohms or less while ON?
Yes
GO to A6 .

No
REPLACE the brake pedal position switch. TEST the system for normal operation.
A6 TEST CIRCUIT 511 (LG) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND


Shift Lock Actuator C212


Measure the resistance of Circuit 511 (LG), Pin C212-1.


Is the resistance 10K ohms or less?
Yes
REPAIR Circuit 511 (LG) for a short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
GO to A7 .
A7 TEST CIRCUIT 511 (LG) FOR AN OPEN

Measure the resistance of Circuit 511 (LG) between the shift lock actuator Connector C212-1 and the brake ON/OFF switch Connector C210.


Is the resistance 5 ohms or less?
Yes
GO to A8 .

No
REPAIR Circuit 511 (LG) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
A8 TEST FOR B+ ON CIRCUIT 1003 (GY/Y)



Measure the voltage at the shift lock actuator Pin C212-3, Circuit 1003 (GY/Y).


Is B+ present?
Yes
GO to A12 .

No
GO to A9 .
A9 TEST FUSE 10 (7.5A)




Fuse 10 (7.5A)



Is the resistance of the fuse 5 ohms or less?
Yes
GO to A11 .

No
GO to A10 .
A10 TEST CIRCUIT 1003 (GY/Y) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

Measure the resistance at Pin C210-3, Circuit 1003 (GY/Y).


Is the resistance 10K ohms or less?
Yes
REPAIR the circuit for a short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
GO to A11 .
A11 TEST CIRCUIT 1003 (GY/Y) FOR AN OPEN

Measure the resistance of Circuit 1003 (GY/Y) between the output side of Fuse 10 (7.5A) and the shift lock actuator Pin C212-3.


Is the resistance 5 ohms or less?
Yes
GO to A12 .

No
REPAIR Circuit 1003 (GY/Y) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
A12 TEST CIRCUIT 57 (BK) FOR AN OPEN

Measure the resistance of the shift lock actuator Pin C212-2, Circuit 57 (BK).


Is the resistance 5 ohms or less?
Yes
REPLACE the shift lock actuator. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
REPAIR Circuit 57 (BK) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.

wow, i had trouble reading this. yes it is the stering wheel lock thing that wont let it out of park...

Sorry but I can never get it to paste much better, each test starts with A1, A2, etc.
