88 Ranger, 2.3 FI,,, head gasket went at 150K, easy or hard, worth paying someone to do,, I have no problems wrenching but dont have a bunch of time, I am off all next week though and this thing just went,
and best way to clean out block from antifreeze,, old days we used Kerosene to do it?
I would hate to pay someone to do it and then have the bottom end go but that is a chance I would have to take,
If you have the time it's not a paticularly hard job, just take it slow and make sure you do it right. You'll need a shop manual and to be able to keep track of many parts.
trouble is I dont have the time, found a Ex ford mechanic, 30 bucks a hour, doing it here, I have a pretty good shop, Wifes kid car and I dont have the week I would take to do it ( getting old )
Throw away head bolts and some other things, we will see. He says book says 6 hours, sounds about right, ,Probably be the cleanest engine he will ever work on
Well guy was smaller than me, 250 compared to 165 maybe, he climbed right up and watching him and his airtools he was pretty quick, only find out the wifes 17 had hot rodded it and a piston was broke and sitting in at a 45 degree angle and you could see the crack in the block, engine is shot, head probably is okay once cleaned up, but wife already has 2500 in a 1988 ranger, and will now donate it unless someone wants it for parts,
I asked the mechanic ( ford for 8 years ) what caused it, and he replied, if the vehicle was not over heating, and had oil pressure it was most likely over revved alot, the 2.3 litre is not a race machine,
also my opinion is I could have done this job without any problem, taking my time, might not have got it in 6 hours but hey could have saved some money, charged me 40 bucks for his time, which I thought was reasonable
