Here's A Story

Had to have oil pan changed on 2003 F-350 6.0L.
It is taking about 5 days to do it.
The whole front of the truck is apart & motor has to come out.
Service manager says the 7.3's are not as bad to do and every time the tech does a 6.0L he shakes his head for days!
And he claims he has done over 100 removals.
Talk about a PITA.

He shakes his head for days, plural? If he shakes his head for only 2 days per pan R&R, that would mean that he has shaking his head for 200 days MINIMUM. That's alot of shakin. Must be tough to focus on those pan bolts. No wonder it takes 5 days to change the oil pan.
Sorry landstroker, couldn't resist.
I know, I know, just wait till I need a pan replacement.

There is a bulletin on the oil pans rusting on early models. I think the fix is sanding/painting.

Nope no fixing it. It was rusted through and oil was leaking out.
I guess the whole point of the story (which no one got) was that to replace something as simple as a oil pan - you have to basically take off the front of the truck and remove engine. Just seems like alot of work and a lot of time.
The tech shakes his head because he is the one that has to do the work time and time again - MAYBE HE IS WONDERING WHO THE HELL DESIGNED THIS.

Sounds like something we say everyday in the aircraft maintenance world.I've had jobs that took 5 minutes to change a part but 6 hours removing other parts to get to the one that needed changing.

Nothing new there, they basically had to remove the engine from my 1992 F150 to replace the oil pan gasket. The problem being is that these vehicles are designed to be assembled quickly, not disassembled.

The things that are most often touched are easy to access. For example, the oil filter. And on the 6.0's it is much nicer to not have to crawl under the truck to remove it.

How many people have to change their own oil pan? Probably nobody, so why complain about what Ford has to do to fix the issue? I would think that the oil pan had a very low RPN on Ford's DFMEA or PFMEA so that is why it is not easy to remove.
